Elementary Schools' Band & Orchestra Concerts June 7 - 9

It’s a few weeks before the elementary schools’ concert season and student musicians are polishing their pieces!


Chris Oriani, band teacher, and Linda Kirshenbaum, orchestra teacher, both note the growth of students' musical and collaborative skills. “Above all else, playing in ensembles provides students with an important way to develop interpersonal skills,” said Oriani. “Students learn to work together to put on a collective performance.” MORE

Learning about Hope & History from Holocaust Survivors

Holocaust survivors speak at JJMS

Eighth graders recently met two Holocaust survivors—Ellen and Jerry Kaidanow, now grandparents and residents of New Rochelle. Their stories of survival brought history, empathy and the power of hope to life for the middle school students. 


"I was moved by the efforts made by people who put their life in danger to try to help," said one student afterwards. "It made realize how fortunate I am." MORE

Unified Basketball Brings Students Together

John Jay High School's Unified basketall team

There are not too many basketball games at which both sides cheer when someone makes a basket, but that’s exactly what happens at a unified basketball game. The concept joins people with and without disabilities on the same team. 


"We help each other,” said Christian. “I love it,” said Mia. “I’ve made good friends.” “It’s fun,” said Devon. “It gives you this sense of happiness you can’t get anywhere else,” said Haley. MORE
