On January 27, GUMC leaders shared a message of support and solidarity with our community as we continue to process the beating death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police officers, and the video that captured the horrific incident. Mental health and well-being resources are available for students, faculty and staff. Information can be found on Georgetown’s Every Hoya Cares website.

After 30 years of committed service to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Eileen Ferrell, MS, BSN, RN, the hospital’s chief nursing officer will retire on February 1. Ferrell (N’75, G’83) began her career as a nurse at the hospital after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgetown’s School of Nursing & Health Studies (now School of Nursing and School of Health).
Working in collaboration with the Clinical Research Unit at Georgetown University Medical Center, Maxine Weinstein, PhD, will collect biomarker data for the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Weinstein recently received an award from the National Institute on Aging for $8.2 million award over the next six years to carry out this work.
Transplant surgeons at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital are the first in the Washington metropolitan area to successfully utilize a new FDA-approved technology that allows for expanded access to organs that were previously deemed marginal. The OrganOx metra simulates connecting a liver to its recipient, allowing the donated liver to be preserved for up to 12 hours before being transplanted into the recipient.

Announcements
After riders raised more than $1.4 million for Georgetown Lombardi in 2022, registration is now open for the BellRinger 2023. Use registration code BellRinger2023 to waive the $100 registration fee. 
After staying in contact with a Hyundai IONIQ5 SE for 44 hours, a team from Georgetown Lombardi won a $60,000 grant for pediatric cancer research through Hyundai Hands on Hope at the Washington Auto Show. In addition to the grant, contestant and lab supervisor Jeff Petro picked the key that started the vehicle, making him the winner of the car.
The GUMC Faculty Mentoring Program for New and Early Career Faculty is open for applications for a new cohort of 15 mentees and five pod leaders. An information session will take place on February 7 at 5:00 p.m. to share more about the program, what mentees can expect and qualifications needed to be a pod leader. Applications are due February 10. Email questions to gumcmentoring@georgetown.edu.
Green space has significant implications for community well-being. The Massive Data Institute at the McCourt School of Public Policy welcomes undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals to join a virtual Green Space Data Challenge. Participants will have the month of February to demonstrate the value of green space data by creating analyses, visualizations, and new community indicators. Find more information and register here.
The MedStar Health-Georgetown University Research and Education Symposium will be held May 8 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. The symposium brings together investigators, educators, executive leaders, associates and collaborative partners from across our academic health system to share their research to advance health in our communities. The Georgetown University Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (GUROP) is an undergraduate research assistantship program that allows undergraduates in any discipline to build their skills in scholarly inquiry. Participants work under the direction of a Georgetown University professor for approximately 60 hours over the course of one semester. The GUROP spring 2023 semester application pre-enrollment form is due by 11:59 p.m. on February 10. Learn more here.

MedDent Flood Update
Here is an update as of January 28 on work in the MedDent Building following the burst pipe/flood in December.

  • Inventory of damaged property is complete; work to replace insured items continues.
  • Remediation and restoration work is underway beginning with spaces where telework isn’t an easy option such as affected laboratories and some offices.
