 Meet Sidhvi Reddy

You've been doing undergraduate research since your first year at OU. How did you learn about the opportunity, and how did you know that research was something you wanted to try?

I first began research through a program called FYRE, which stands for Four-Year Research Engagement, during the spring of my freshman year. I think it has changed a bit since I first did it, but it is a program at OU that pairs students with research mentors and encourages them to work with faculty on their research. I learned about it through the Honors College, which supports the program along with DFCAS. Becoming involved in research was always important to me because I wanted to understand biochemical and microbiological concepts and develop skills within the lab. It helped me a lot with my microbiology labs because I learned so many different techniques from research that I was able to apply in my labs. I continued with it because I really enjoyed it and learned a lot from my mentors. It is an experience that I consider integral to my four years at OU.

What advice do you have for other students who want to get involved in undergraduate research?

I would encourage students to consider the FYRE program and see if it fits their interests. The program can place students in a variety of research fields, not just in the hard sciences. If students are trying to find mentors on their own, they should do their research on the faculty at OU and see if they are interested in any research topics that a professor is taking part in. Often, professors at OU love to see that students are interested in their work, so students should email them or talk to them about their research to see if they can get involved.

What is your favorite thing about being in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences?

There are so many things that make the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences amazing, so it's hard to choose just one. I'd say that one of my favorite things is the amount of support that one can find here. The Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences has so many faculty members and fellow students who are willing to help with anything you might need. The deans of the college are incredibly supportive and involved, and I've also gotten a lot of support from professors within the microbiology and community health majors as well. I'm grateful to have this level of support here at OU, since it has made my four years here a great experience.
