Bonjour Everyone!

  • It's great to see more and more people coming back to the restaurant. We have missed you! Before pandemic we had wine club on three nights, if we need to add a second night we can do Wednesday April 14. If that is a better night for anyone let me know so I know who I can move if necessary. I am excited for Bourgogne wines. I have never been a pinot noir fan, but I have tasted so many, I can officially say I love Pinot Noir! And of course we know Bourgogne has some of the best Pinot in the world.

Bourgogne Wines

There are five different wine producing areas in the Bourgogne Region. There is the Chablis area which is very far from the rest of the wine growing regions. Then there is the Beaujolais region in the south of Bourgogne. The third region is the Cote Chalonnaise & Maconnais growing area, which is very small but there is one wine that is famous, Pouilly-fuisse. I know we can find that on the Grand Strand. The other two areas are the largest producers in the smallest areas, Cote De Beaune and Cote De Nuits. Which both had Outstanding (Beaune) and Extraordinary (Nuits) vintage year in 2015. Cote De Nuits also had an Extraordinary year in 2016.

Cote De Nuits
Most of the premier/grand cru red wines can be found in this area. The reds are 100% Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir grape produces a richer complex and hearty wine because of the limestone in the soil, which allows these Pinots to be aged. I would still look for a quality domaine or a premier/grand cru to age because in this region it takes the grapes longer to ripen because of the higher elevation. If picked too early the grape is not as hearty and therefore shouldn't be aged for long.  Wine companies also buy the Pinot Noir for blending, companies such as Louis Jadot and Bouchard Pere & Fils, are among the higher quality companies. The AOC Cote de Nuits Villages is usually from the domaine's that have the higher altitude. Look for a Cote de Nuits which will be under Domaine (name of producer) Example: Domaine Armand Rousseau, Cote De Nuits.

Cote De Beaune
If you have a nice wine cellar, please check to see if you have a Chassagne-Montrachet premier/grand cru, we would appreciate it if you brought it in! One of the highest quality reds in the Beaune region. There are a lot of vineyards with premier cru status in the Beaune region. The big event in Beaune is The Hospice of Beaune Auction. Fifty eight hectors of vineyard have been donated to the hospice, they make the wine and sell the barrels to wine lovers all over the world. This auction has set the price for the wines of Beaune. Another annual event, Le Marche Aux Vins, allows the wineries to donate their best bottle to be auctioned off to support the local hospice (hospital for the poor). The Beaune region not only produces red but some of the finest Chardonnay. You may recognize some of the names like Meursault and the Puligny-Montrachet are two vineyards that produce chardonnay. If you are looking for a dark, tannic red, look for a Pommard, don't buy too young, it needs to be aged at least 6-8 years. If you see an AOC "Hautes Cotes de Beaune" it's from a higher elevation, and remember the grapes don't ripen as fast and it may be a lighter wine. If you find the AOC " Cote de Beaune" it will be from a less prestigious village in the area.

 Vintage Review:
Cote de Nuits (red) Best year is 2016, 2015, 2010 & 2005
Cote de Beaune (red) Best year is 2015, 2005. 2013 was not the best year, anything above 2008 with the exception of 2013 is what you should look for.
2005 for a red burgundy was an extraordinary year in both Cote de Beaune & Cote de Nuits.

White Burgundy
2017 & 2014 was an Extraordinary Year for White Burgundy.
2004-2015 were all outstanding years for the whites. 2016 was just an average year. 2003 still produced a good wine but not as good as the above.

Good Luck!
Whatever you bring we will drink it!!
