IN A HOT JOB MARKET, RENEGES A CONCERN FOR EMPLOYERS
How does ECS manage reneges?
It's no secret--the current job market for engineering students is booming. We love the multitude of opportunities for our students, but preventing job offer reneges is top-of-mind for our office. So how do we help mitigate reneges?
Provide employers with guidance on reasonable timelines. For spring offers we ask that you give students a minimum of 3 weeks from the time of the offer or until April 15th (whichever comes later) to make a decision. Pressuring students to accept quickly increases the chance that they will renege. You can find all of our job offer guidelines here.
Coach students on conducting an ethical job search. When engineering students register with ECS, they agree to policies like representing themselves honestly, keeping their commitments, and no longer pursuing other opportunities once they've accepted a position. In advising appointments and offer workshops, we coach them on how to avoid reneging as well by clearly communicating with employers and navigating deadlines.
In the instance that your have a renege, let us know. We want to help the student learn and avoid this scenario in the future. We may also have feedback for your company on avoiding these scenarios. As always, our goal is to empower students to attain lifelong career management and connect them with employers like you for hiring purposes.
