WESLEY WEEKLY

May 19 - 26

Dear Wesley Memorial Family

A new team has been formed to begin gathering information on the coming changes in the Methodist church. The team had our second meeting last week to begin our work. The first meeting was to get organized. We want to be transparent with the congregation and so are sending you our purpose statement, our meeting minutes and the contact information for team members. We are working on a Discernment Team communications location on the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church website.

This committee was formed as an exploratory team because of the possible splitting of our United Methodist Church (UMC) denomination.

Our purpose is to objectively gather as much information as possible about the relevant issues and to disseminate that information to the congregation, so that (if called upon) the congregation can be equipped to make an informed decision about whether to remain a member of the UMC denomination. We will also carefully discern what alternatives may be available for Wesley Memorial United Methodist in the future.

We anticipate that our work will be thorough and ongoing. Any vote taken about the future of our church will be from the congregation and not this team. We encourage our Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church family to do their own research on these issues. We welcome and encourage open dialogue with team members.

Dr. Ryan N. Danker, Associate Professor of Church History and Wesley Studies at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C., will be a guest speaker Monday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. His topic will be “The Next Methodism.”

An active United Methodist, Danker is a church historian with a passion for evangelical studies, and in particular the early Wesleyan/Methodist movement under John and Charles Wesley. Born in Portland, Oregon, he served United Methodist churches in the Western North Carolina

Annual Conference. He currently serves as a member of the United Methodist/U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Dialogue. He is active in the American Academy of Religion, the Wesleyan Theological Society, and the Charles Wesley Society.

He is the author of the acclaimed “Wesley and the Anglicans: Evangelical Division in Early Evangelicalism” (IVP Academic, 2016) and, along with Kenneth J. Collins, is the editor of The Next Methodism: Theological, Social, and Missional Foundations for

“A Summer in Narnia with C.S. Lewis”

Would you like to spend time in a magical place while also learning the riches of the Christian faith and the life and thoughts of the great defender of the Christian faith, C.S. Lewis? Join Dr. Jeff Patterson Wednesdays, June – August from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Dining Hall for a study of two of his “Chronicles of Narnia,” The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Magician’s Nephew. The reading will be minimal and fun. (These are children’s books!) We will learn Scripture and Christian theology by following the adventures of some amazing characters.

To be part of this experience, call the church office to register or email Cynthia.

Purchase a copy of the two books (Amazon or Barnes & Noble Booksellers is a good source for the books.) Read the first chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first meeting on

Wednesday, June 1. Then, just show up at the meeting with your book and your Bible.

Music camp picture.jpg

Attention All Musicians

If you play any kind of an instrument that is portable, would you consider doing a “show and tell“ at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Kids Music and Arts Camp one morning June 7, 8, or 9? The kids would have so much fun seeing a variety of instruments. All we ask is that you bring it, introduce it briefly to the kids, and give them a short sample of what it sounds like! If you would like to participate in this fun time, please Ann Marie Chilton email or call 704-737-9495.

WMS Grandparents Tea

The Wesley Memorial School honored grandparents who go the “Extra Mile” at a Grandparents Appreciation Tea on Friday, May 13. These grandparents are the ones who drop off, pick up, and keep their grandchildren in the afternoons to support parents who work full-time. The honored guests arrived, and as Ann Marie was playing the piano, they were greeted by members from the WMS Early Childhood Committee and served tea and cookies. They were also registered to win a $25 gift certificate to the new Qubein Children’s Museum. Susan opened with a welcoming prayer, a cute job description list for Grandparents, their important role in the family, and had them share their special given name (ex: MiMi & PopPop). Susan Hedrick, a former WMS grandparent shared a special message, “My Grammy Uber Service.” Ann Marie shared a beautiful devotional. JoAnn along with the WMS kindergarteners sang, “Come Praise the Lord” and shared a joyful noise while playing, “Amazing Grace” on the handbells. JoAnn closed with a poem and the ECC helped to pass out goodie bags and flowers.
