John 14:23-29

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Jesus answered him, "Those who love Me will keep My word, and My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard Me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe."

Pentecost Special Offering

The Pentecost Offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people and inspire them to share their faith, ideas, and unique gifts with the church and the world.

investing in our greatest resource

Help youth begin a life with a solid foundation of faith.

Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service. The patterns and lessons established during these formative years continue to bear fruit throughout a person's life. By receiving the Pentecost Offering, you are nurturing the faith of those who are the church to come - children, youth, and young adults.

your impact

Nurturing the faith of those who are the church to come

A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support children-at-risk, youth, and young adults through the ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

First Church will be collecting this special offering on Pentecost Sunday, June 5. Please give as your heart leads. You may also mail an offering to the church. Please write Pentecost on the memo line of your check.

Antique Quilts: Stories

The antique quilt hanging in the hallway during April was made by our own Mary K. Williams. She embroidered the quilt squares when she was in high school. She thinks she was fifteen. That makes the quilt about 90 years old. The squares were sewn together by her mother, and the quilters from a local Methodist Church did the hand quilting. Lots of tiny stitches, you'll notice that not all the stitches are alike. That indicates different people were involved in the quilting. Sounds like a quilting bee to me.

Congratulations to Mallory Sage!

Mallory graduated from Iowa State University on May 14 with a bachelor of landscape architecture. She will be working in Des Moines this summer and will return to our area in the fall to work for Tall Grass Prairie at UNI. Mallory is a past recipient of the Warnock Scholarship. Mallory, we are so proud!

Inge's work with the Presbyterian Church of Kinshasa and IMA World Health focuses on training volunteers to help communities address malnutrition through nutrition and home gardening education and improved cook stoves. The UN's International Labor Organization estimates that 21 million people are victims of coerced labor and/or forced into sexual exploitation. Recently, their work in this area has been challenged by the pandemic and destruction from typhoons. Juan has been working with colleagues to address the social and mental issues of children and teenagers caused by school closures and government restrictions forcing young people to stay inside for extended periods of time.
