COVID-19 Testing on May 24: Registration ends Friday at 6:00 p.m.
On Monday, May 24, MPH will administer COVID-19 tests to up to 90 students and employees who register on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Testing will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will end promptly at 8:45 a.m.
  •  Advanced registration is required. Register here.
  • Employees and students will be tested quickly and efficiently upon their arrival on campus to ensure minimal interruption to the instructional day.
  • All students and employees (whether vaccinated or not) are encouraged to participate. Although COVID-19 testing is not required, it is the best way to detect asymptomatic cases in our community.

We are all in this together until we are all out of this together.
21st Annual Repertory Dance Concert!
Please join us tomorrow (Saturday) at 2:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.!
If this “teaser” doesn’t ignite your curiosity, we’re not sure what will! Over the past several years, it has become a tradition to invite back an MPH Dance alum to choreograph a new dance piece for our current Upper School students. This year we were thrilled to have Lydia Kelly ('17) return to stage a joyful three-movement disco piece! Lydia recently graduated from Ithaca College with a BFA in acting and a minor in dance.

Join us via livestream this Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. for the 21st Annual Repertory Dance Concert, where you can view Lydia’s piece, in addition to an eclectic mix of repertory dances and choreography from the past and present.

Olympic Day
In the words of Grade 3 teacher Ms. Palmer: “We had a fantastic Olympic Day today! With positive attitudes and matching bandanas, we took to the field to have fun and do our best. We participated in events such as kicking, jumping, jump roping, and throwing. We also competed in relay races and showed great sportsmanship by cheering for other grades and congratulating them when they won an event.” Click here to see a gallery of images from the day!

Celebrating Seniors
~Thank You, Parents' Association!
Last Friday, members of the Class of 2021 went down to the Lower Field to receive their caps and gowns and found a special treat waiting for them—ice cream from Gannon’s, courtesy of the Parents’ Association! Special thanks to MPH parents Shelbi Pisciarino and Theresa Heath for coordinating this surprise, which delighted the seniors.
~On what was technically their last academic day (last Friday), seniors were “sent off” — with both carnations and expressions of congratulations offered by MPH juniors and several faculty members.
~Seniors (quite literally) left their mark on MPH before departing. Check out their parting signatures on the wall of the Student Lounge. (Don’t worry, parents; this was approved!)
Earth Science Students Developing Their Sense of Time
To better understand geologic time, our Grade 8 scientists built a scalar, geologic timeline and noted certain events on the line. The birthday candles are what one team selected to represent the age of the Earth — clever, right?

When There’s a Maypole, It Must Be.....
May! Ms. Koziara took some time this week to teach her younger Performing Arts classes the ins and outs of the Maypole dance, a ceremonial folk dance performed around a tall, decorated pole (or tree) that includes long ribbons; the dancers are spread out evenly around the pole, holding the ends of the ribbons, and as they weave in and out with certain dance steps, the patterns of intertwining ribbons become complex. Variations of the Maypole dance have been around for hundreds of years and can be thought of, generally, as a celebration of spring (and in ancient times, as part of a hopeful spring ritual to usher in a full crop or to ensure fertility). Once an annual tradition for the Goodyear-Burlingame School, this tradition was first adopted by MPH many years ago by Ms. Koziara, when her dancers performed it at a reunion for alumni of the Pebble Hill and Goodyear-Burlingame schools in this same flagpole setting. Seen here are our Kindergarteners enjoying the celebratory ritual!

COVID-19 Vaccines for Ages 12–15 Now Available in Onondaga County
COVID-19 vaccines for individuals ages 12 and above are now widely available in our area. MPH encourages everyone who is able to get vaccinated to do so. Please use this link to find a convenient location.
Fifth-Grade Play Lives On!
Congratulations to Grade 5 on this year’s inimitable fifth-grade play, which premiered (virtually) last Friday night. The final production clearly reflected an immense amount of hard work and collaboration. Did you miss this culminating project? No need to fret! The recording of it may be viewed here!
Gratitude for “Giving Day” Success!
Thank you to everyone who supported our first-ever spring Giving Day last Friday. The community response was overwhelming, and we could not be more grateful! In 24 hours we raised nearly $65,000 from 132 donors to directly support the work being done each day to educate so many young minds! Click here to see a message from our students, the true beneficiaries of your generosity, who wished to express their gratitude personally. (**A big shout out to our Upper School Social Media Marketing students, who conceptualized, filmed, and produced this video. **)
Sing Me a Shanty (in Calculus!)
Ms. Meehan’s AP Calculus AB students were very recently given an optional assignment: They could write a sea shanty (apparently quite TikTok trendy these days) that covered all the derivative rules they’d learned in the first half of the year and then perform it. Some of the students simply wrote the song (or a short story), and some performed the songs that they composed. Ms. Meehan reports that they did a great job with the rhythm and rhyming! Click here to listen to a group, audio-only shanty; on one of the images to view some lyrics up close; or on the image at the bottom to see a recorded video.
Please Support Our Multicultural Festival...
...by Ordering This (Awesome!) Tee—by Monday!

As is typical, our Grade 10 students have organized MPH’s annual Multicultural Festival, which will take place on June 2 (details to come!). In the meantime, this hardworking crew would really appreciate your support via submitting a Multicultural Festival t-shirt order. The shirts have been partly designed by sophomore Maggie Stokes-Rees and partly designed by senior Juli Teres. At just $15 per t-shirt, you would be sporting a very cool design at a reasonable cost! Orders need to be placed by this coming Monday (May 24). Just click HERE for the order form.
Making Fractions More Palatable!
As seen in a previous edition of Snapshot, Grade 3 mathematicians have been hard at work on their fractions unit. Most recently, the unit has taken a delicious turn, as the third graders put their growing base of knowledge to good work: making smoothies! In this part of the unit, they read word problems, identified equivalent fractions, put the fractions in simplest form, and then wrote directions to smoothie recipes. Of course, this culminated in actually testing their instructions. And the fruits of their labor? Delish! Click here to view an album of fraction photos!
Tapas (and beyond…) in Spanish Club!
Members of the Spanish Club recently enjoyed learning all about “Tapas.” In a Zoom call, Profesor Daniel Ruiz Zurita (MPH alumnus from Madrid, Spain) described many “Tapas” dishes from Spain, and the students also learned about the “Paella,” a specialty dish from Valencia. During this Zoom session with Profesor Ruiz, Spanish Club members also showed him all the changes that have taken place at MPH since 1991. At the end of the Clubs block, fellow Spanish Club students said “Hasta Siempre” (“see you always”) to Victor, co-president of Spanish Club, and to Farouq, vice president of Spanish Club. We wish them the best as they venture off to college next year.

Gracias,
Parmees (president of Spanish club) and Profesora Medina-Dooher

Important Message from the Health Office
An ongoing gentle reminder, in case you missed it in the last few editions of Snapshot: Please schedule your student’s yearly physical and necessary vaccinations now to avoid a mad dash in August and September. New students in all grade levels, and current students who will be entering Grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, are required by New York State to have a physical on file in the Health Office two weeks before the start of school. There are also specific vaccinations required for Grades K, 6, 7, and 12. Please communicate with your child’s health care provider or the school nurse if you have any questions about what is due or whether your child will need a physical. Thank you!
Just for Fun: It’s a Domino Effect
These Grade 6 students were caught experimenting with chain reactions in the STEAM Park. Their oversized “dominoes” sure make it look particularly fun!
