The Independent NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

In December I traveled to Cape Coral for the Mid-Year Board Meeting. I am pleased to report that the Hurricane Ian devastation mostly spared the Westin Hotel and surrounding area.

That doesn’t discount the tremendous damage and loss of life in the region. In meeting with a local member, Ed Crittenden, I saw photos and video which were startling. Many of our member firms will be busy for quite some time helping policyholders recover.

We have many insurance companies and member firms that rely on the ability to quickly locate a member firm in the location of the loss, to assign a claim investigation and adjustment. It is important that each member firm regularly update their listings to ensure they can provide a competent adjuster who can provide the advertised service type in the advertised service location. Please review your current listings for accuracy.

The NAIIA rightfully states that we have some of the best adjusters in the country who can provide superior claim handling in the locations and lines of coverage they service. We all need to make sure that this promise can be kept for the benefit of the NAIIA brand.

Shortly it will be time for desirous parties to submit their name for nomination to serve on the executive board. If you have the time, some fresh ideas, a bit of energy and a desire to serve, please contact Sheri Csom.

We have two regional meetings in February: the Southeast Region, led by RVP Maggie Moss Hufstedler, meets in Atlanta and the Southwest Region, led by RVP Rock Phillips, meets in Dallas-Fort Worth. All members, regardless of region, are invited to these meetings and network with fellow members, insurer personnel and vendors. Full information is available at www.naiia.com.

The annual convention registration is now open, and the information is within this newsletter. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Cape Coral will be a great meeting location.

Sooner than that, the NAIIA will have a booth at the PLRB in Orlando in March and I expect we will see many member firms there. If you will be there and want to volunteer some time at the booth, so I can stretch my legs occasionally, please contact Sheri Csom.

The Strategic Planning Committee and Board have been reviewing various items, including the future of the Blue Book and potential 2023-2024 initiatives to help all members. I’ll have more to say about this next newsletter.

NAIIA Member Spotlights
Executive Director Sheri Csom had the pleasure of visiting long-time NAIIA member Johns Eastern Company, Inc. while in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. President Don Lederer was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule for a tour of the Lakewood Ranch office.

Corydon T. Johns formed Johns & Company in 1946 in Tampa, Florida. In 1971, Johns & Company purchased Eastern Adjustment Company, Inc. The acquisition gave Johns & Company access to markets outside Florida and led to the corporate name Johns Eastern Company, Inc. In 2022, Davies acquired Johns Eastern Company.
NAIIA President Peter Schifrin, Immediate Past President Cathy Hester, and Executive Director Sheri Csom were honored to visit Edward and Janie Crittenden of Crittenden Adjustment Company (Florida), Inc. in Fort Myers, Florida. The meeting occurred while attending the NAIIA Board of Directors Mid-Year Meeting.

Crittenden Adjustment Company was established in 1971. It originated in a garage office at the home of Archer B. Crittenden in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 1990, the Florida operations had grown to require in-state, hands-on supervision, so Edward and his family relocated to the beautiful state of Florida.

In March of 1996, Edward and his wife purchased the Florida operations and continue to operate the company in the same professional fashion that each of the company’s clients has come to know and expect. They have seven offices located throughout Florida.
FOR THE INVESTIGATION YOU WISH YOU HAD

"In a perfect world, you have all the time you need to conduct your defense investigation. Bacteria won’t devour the rubber skid marks left on the roadway. Rain won’t wash away debris and smooth out shoulders of roads. But alas, the world is not perfect."

In Memory of Michael Hale
This year we lost an outstanding member and friend in the insurance industry, Michael Hale. As we all know, Michael was an entrepreneur, an insurance wizard, a problem solver, visionary, and so much more. He loved his career, his family, his friends, and his town.

Michael Hale started his distinguished career in the insurance industry in 1966, following his service and honorable discharge from the United States Air Force. He worked his way from a claims trainee up to claims supervisor during his time with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Group.

We are grateful to him for his mentorship, leadership, friendship, and lasting impact. Read more about Michael's impact on our blog.
