In public universities, we often believe we are immune from social divisions, especially if we accept the credo that our institutions are committed to “the public good.” However, if we look at disciplinary cultures for example, there are distinctions that, albeit unintentional, create hierarchies within institutions of higher education about what counts as legitimate scholarship, who is to be recognized, and where resource investments are to be made.  

Public Engagement Champion
In honor of National Nurses week occurring in May, PSE is proud to feature the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing clinical education team. This group manages a complex network of partnerships, even during the pandemic, to help students gain clinical experience and help improve the health of communities, especially those in rural areas. Read their story.

Applications for the 2022-23 cohort Public Scholarship Faculty Fellows (PSFF) program are due on May 20, 2022. This competitive fellowship program seeks to acknowledge and reward exemplary individuals who are working toward a specific public scholarship goal, such as a manuscript, book chapter or similar.

Beth Rose Middleton Manning, professor of Native American studies and the Yocha Dehe Endowed Chair in California Indian Studies at UC Davis, recently won a Carnegie Award for her project “Healing Rivers, Communities, and Homelands.” Learn more about her project.
The Sacramento Valley College Corps (SVCC) is still accepting applications for host sites to take on college students who enroll through the #CaliforniansForAll.
