HealthSpark Foundation Conference

'Meeting the Moment' on homelessness & affordable housing in Montgomery County

BRYN MAWR - Community leaders from Montgomery County and beyond gathered Feb. 12, 2024 at the HealthSpark Foundation Community of Practice, "Meeting the Moment: Taking Action on Homelessness and Affordable Housing in Montgomery County." Held at Bryn Mawr College’s Old Library, the conference shed light on the current situation and possible solutions, highlighting partnerships.


Panel: 'Problem-solving legal issues impacting the homeless & how to build collaboration between entities that could help'

Carolyn Johnson, LASP Chief Counsel, served as a panelist as part of the morning breakout session, "Problem-Solving Legal Issues Impacting the Homeless and How to Build Collaboration between Entities that Could Help."

 

She was joined by Alexis Moyer, Mental Health Co-Responder with the Lansdale Police Department and Merakey Behavioral Health; Andy Block, Upper Moreland Township Police Chief. and Sheldon Good, Director of Development and Strategic Direction for Manna on Main Street in Lansdale, who moderated the discussion.

Clean Slate 3.0

Implementing Clean Slate 3.0! New law went into effect Feb. 12, expanding record-sealing & shortening wait times

LASP attorneys began filing petitions under the new Clean Slate 3.0 law on Feb. 12, the first day it went into effect! The law expands record-sealing and shortens some wait times. Record-sealing helps people get better opportunities for jobs, housing and education.


At the Montgomery Bar Association, LASP attorneys outlined changes to the law with 20+ attorneys at a CLE Feb. 22.

Fond farewell to Jennifer Pierce, Pro Bono Director

Jennifer Pierce Severns will be departing LASP on March 8. She has accepted a role at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School Toll Public Interest Center as Associate Director of Student Pro Bono Initiatives. 


Jennifer joined LASP as Staff Attorney in 2015 in Bucks County, focusing on dependency, custody and Protection from Abuse cases. During her 9+ year tenure at LASP, she served as Managing Attorney of the Doylestown office, Bucks County Pro Bono Coordinator starting in 2018, and VOCA Supervising Attorney in 2021. Since December 2021, she has served as Pro Bono Director. 


"She has helped us make significant strides in pro bono delivery during her tenure pursuant to funding from an LSC Pro Bono Innovation Fund Transformation grant," said Executive Director Shawn Boehringer. "This is a fabulous opportunity for Jennifer, and we wish her much success at Penn."


Jennifer is currently chair of the Bucks County Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division and will continue to lead LASP's inaugural softball tournament (see below).

MALVERN - LASP staff, board and volunteers gathered at Loch Aerie in Malvern for the Chester County Bar Association President's Dinner Feb. 9. LASP pro bono volunteer Mark Blank, Jr. (front row, at right) received the Hon. Juan R. Sanchez Pro Bono Service Award. The award honors an exemplary volunteer attorney who, during the past year, went above and beyond in service to legal aid clients and LASP's mission.

 

Mark is a Pennsylvania Emeritus Attorney through a program which started in 2018 by order of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He is one of only 40 emeritus attorneys currently active in PA!

Bucks County pro bono opportunities

Volunteers needed Thursdays at 2 p.m. for eviction prevention program in Lower Makefield Township

Pro bono attorneys are invited to volunteer for an eviction prevention program in Bucks County! The hearings take place every Thursday at 2 p.m. at Judge Kronnagel’s MDJ court, located at 31 E. Cleveland Ave., Morrisville, PA 19067. The project is a collaboration between the Bucks County Bar Association Pro Bono Committee, LASP, and the Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC), with support from the Bucks County Dept. of Housing & Community Development.

Represent plaintiffs at PFA hearings any Wednesday in Doylestown

DOYLESTOWN - Provide representation for plaintiffs at Protection from Abuse (PFA) hearings, held every Wednesday. CHOOSE ANY DAY(S)! Upcoming dates when volunteers for plaintiffs are especially needed are Wednesday, March 6 and 13, 2024.


LIMITED SCOPE pro bono opportunity, with no expectation of continued representation beyond the day of volunteer service.


New volunteers can observe PFA Day and learn from staff and current volunteers before committing to provide representation. You do NOT need to be a family law attorney to participate. Hearings are at Bucks County Justice Center, Doylestown.

The 2024 Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project will begin in February 2024 and continue through summer. Volunteer opportunities are available for attorneys, paralegals, law students and community members.

Ongoing: Pro bono attorneys needed for multiple practice areas

Make a difference in Delaware County! Pro bono opportunities include no fault, no asset divorces; simple wills, powers of attorney, healthcare directives for seniors; custody (limited scope available); and other civil legal issues low-income individuals face. Your volunteer service improves access to justice.


Divorce

Pro bono volunteers are needed to represent clients in no fault, no asset divorces. The divorces are either by consent or one-year separation and do not involve equitable distribution, custody, support, or fault grounds. Typically, a pro bono volunteer will not need to appear at a court proceeding in these cases.


Custody

Pro bono volunteers are needed to represent clients in custody cases in a limited scope, pursuant to the PA Rules of Professional Conduct and Delaware County’s limited entry of appearance rule. Delaware County's Rule 1012 permits attorneys to withdraw by praecipe after representation at the number of custody conferences agreed to in advance.

Eviction prevention in 8 courts across the county as part of EPIC

The Eviction Prevention & Intervention Coalition (EPIC) started in 2017 in one courtroom in Norristown and is currently in eight Magisterial District Justice courtrooms across Montgomery County: three in Norristown, two in Pottstown, and one each in East Norriton, Jenkintown and Lansdale.

Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project

LASP & United Way of Chester County team up to help Chester County mobile home owners with free tax reassessments

The 2024 Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project is starting!


A collaboration between LASP and United Way of Chester County, this impactful project provides free tax reassessments, including preparation and filing of the tax appeal and representation at the hearing. Since 2019, this project has assisted in 1,014 successful appeals and saved each mobile home owner an average of $800+ on their annual taxes. Deadline to apply: Friday, July 12, 2024.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The Management Information Exchange (MIE) held its Supervising Legal Work Training Feb. 13-15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The training was designed to help new supervisors with fewer than three years of supervisory experience transition from peer to manager through substantive presentations and facilitated small group discussion. Erica led one of the small group cohorts throughout the training.

LSC Innovations in Technology Conference


CHARLOTTE, NC - Executive Directors from Delaware, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington, DC gathered for dinner in Charlotte, North Carolina during the 2024 Legal Services Corporation Innovations in Technology Conference in Feb. 1-3.


Held Feb. 1-3, the conference included executive directors, technologists, legal aid advocates, court personnel, law school professors, disaster legal aid attorneys, pro bono coordinators, and other professionals. Presenters addressed cutting-edge technology that is impacting access to justice and enhancing efforts to bring high-quality legal representation for low-income individuals. Pre-conference sessions included disaster legal aid and pro bono programs.
