Memory Care Resources & Support

Greetings!

After an exciting start to our 2021 Dementia Education Series last month, we are thrilled to continue it this month by focusing on the next Key Montessori Principles for February. Read below for activity ideas, information on this month's session, and an opportunity to catch-up on last month's webinar to explore all 12 principles from the beginning.

If you know someone that would be interested in information such as this, please help us by forwarding this to them. This month’s Key Montessori Principle is
“Invite the person to participate”

In Montessori-Based Activities for Persons with Dementia, Volume 2, Cameron Camp describes the best way to present an invitation, why it matters, and what to do if an invitation is not accepted:
Upcoming Events

These events are open to the public and we encourage you to share these links with anyone who provides memory care to a loved one or client. Internal training sessions for communities and companies are also available. Reach out to vince@cen4ard.com to discuss training opportunities for your team.
Dr. Cameron Camp and Gary Johnson continue the 2021 Monthly Webinar Series with an exploration of Principle 2: Invite on February 24th at 2:00 pm EST. Spend an hour each month with memory care and long-term care experts, exploring the foundation of a person-centered approach to care for people with dementia.
In order to allow more of our friends to join the series from the beginning, we have added a special Principle 1 "catch-up" session to take place immediately prior to session 2. If you missed January's webinar, you can still attend Principle 1: Establish Purpose on February 24th at 1:00 pm EST. NOTE: These sessions require separate registrations.

Reserve your space now for these, or any events in the series at www.monarch-pathways.com/12-principle-webinars. Register for all 12 sessions to receive an autographed copy of Dr. Camp's book, Hiding the Stranger in the Mirror.

SPECIAL OFFER! Gain complimentary access to our Montessori Dementia Care Professional 6-hour online training course (CEU eligible, $125 value) when you register for 12 sessions in this series. Anyone that has completed the course for CMDCP certification can instead enroll in the 4-hour CMDCP renewal course.
Activity Ideas and Inspiration
We have selected these resources from our activity manuals to demonstrate this month's principle: Invite. We will add these to our Free Resources page. Browse these and other books and manuals in our Online Shop.
Make a Date - Being invited on a date is a feeling we can all appreciate. This activity, originally designed for inviting an older adult with memory impairments, provides instructions for considering appropriate activities, presenting them, and setting up the date. However, care partners in residential communities should consider assisting a resident in setting up an invitation to present to their family members. How special would it be to be invited on a date by a loved one with memory loss? With consideration of visitor restrictions, the original activity has been supplemented with ideas that allow for social distancing and safety, but times like these benefit from everyone’s creativity. Have an idea? Just try it! [Download pdf]
Life Stories - A personal invitation is often the most meaningful, and what can be more personal than one’s own life story. While dementia is a deficit in retaining and retrieving recent memories, an individual with memory loss may still have access to memories from earlier in his or her life and may be pleased to share these memories with someone that expresses interest in them. As always, an individual may choose to refuse an invitation and that wish must be honored. We also stress that prior permission for sharing stories must be obtained from the person responsible for the participant’s care, as well as the participant themselves. This activity includes extensions and adaptations for sharing the stories, or inviting an individual to participate in sharing stories from other people. [Download pdf]
We hope you'll join us for the Principle 1 catch-up session this month if you weren't able to in January. Why does it matter for an activity to have a purpose? We'd like to take a moment to applaud the winners of the 2021 Activity Professionals Week contest: The Ventura County Adult Day Health Care Center Activities Department! Not only did they submit a beautiful quilt made by their residents but also a poem and a song about the profession. Their creative and thoughtful submission means everyone in their department wins complimentary membership from contest sponsor National Association of Activity Professionals (NAAP), CMDCP certification from sponsor ICCDP, CDP certification from sponsor NCCDP, complimentary Montessori Dementia training from Center for Applied Research in Dementia, and a cash prize to the person who submitted the entry.
