Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
May 2024

May I just say...
I just returned from Toronto at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies meeting. It was a lovely spring meeting in a great city. There were so many highlights but to name a few…
A poster about the meaning of medicine caught my eye. There were tremendous presentations by our own:
-
Mankaah Acho, MD, Pediatric Resident, “Pediatric Residents Assessment of a Community-Based Behavior and Development Curriculum."
-
Abigail McCall MD, Pediatric Resident, “Perceptions of an EHR Initiative to Facilitate Healthcare Referrals and to Improve Communication with WIC.”
-
Stephen Rowse, MD, Pediatric Resident, “Barriers to Timely Discharge in Febrile Infants 8-60 Days of Age with Negative Cultures.”
-
Zarin Noor, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Panelist “Empowering the future: Refugee Children’s Medical Care and Resettlement in the US.”
I also really enjoyed a panel presentation on retaining for diversity by Meg McNamara, MD and Pediatric Residency Director UCSF School of Medicine as well as many other topical presentations by UCSF faculty.
Most of all, it was just amazing to connect with all the folks who trained with us, current faculty, and a really fantastic exhibit from UCSF on clinical applications for 3-D printing.
A special thanks to all the GME leaders including Celeste Allen, MD who serves as our DIO, Director of GME, and Residency Director and has been getting the work out on all the team efforts: Associate Program Directors: Dang Nguyen, MD, Zarin Noor, MD, Javay Ross, MD, and April Zaat, MD. Also, thank you to Continuity Clinic Director, Gena Lewis, MD.
There are many others who now contribute to GME leading key rotations and as core faculty. Thank you all.
Congratulations to our rising Chief Residents: Sarah Blacher, MD, Kelly Hilk, MD, Jay Kwon, MD, and Emily Moody, MD, as well as house-staff presidents Abby McCall, MD, Brenna Mendoza, MD, and Rachael White, MD.
The annual ACGME Survey is complete for the 2023-2024 year and shows the dedication of all the faculty who support training on our campus. Scores increased in most areas and are above or close to the national mean in most areas. Timely feedback is appreciated by trainees both in real time and in MedHub. Keep up the good work!
In case you missed it… Please check out the recordings of our “BCH Faculty Seminar Series: Initiating Cross-Bay Clinical Trials,” soon to be posted, as well as other topics of interest on our events page.
Be well,
Kelley

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series | |
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
