Charlotte Metcalf's Conservation Commitment Grows

Last month, Charlotte Metcalf updated a conservation easement she donated more than 15 years ago. The restated deed removes reserved rights for houses, adds acreage and adds protective terms, now covering 159 acres and more than a mile of streams. Charlotte’s restated conservation easement carries forward her commitment to permanence and to the resilience of nature. The U.S. Geological Survey has named a Grant Brook tributary Elizabeth Brook, approving a request made by friends and family of Elizabeth Kilmarx, who lived for years within earshot of its waters. Elizabeth was an avid volunteer who served the town of Lyme virtually any time more hands were needed and was deeply involved in supporting the UVLT’s mission. We are thrilled that Elizabeth’s name will forever be attached to the stream and watershed she knew and loved. Read more here.

Farming and the Farm Bill

Last month at the Newmont Farm in Bradford, Vermont Senator Peter Welch took comments on the pending Farm Bill from farmers and conservationists attending a meeting sponsored by the Connecticut River Joint Commissions. Peg Merrens joined a full room of farmers discussing agriculture trends, needs, and opportunities in the Connecticut River Valley. A portion of the meeting focused on the role of farmland conservation in ensuring that agricultural lands remain available and productive for our future food needs.

Look for UVLT at the Herricks Cove Wildlife Festival May 5



Next Sunday, UVLT will be joining in the fun at Herricks Cove in Rockingham, VT. If you haven’t been to Herricks Cove, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a special day! This popular, family-friendly annual festival features live animals, nature-focused walks, kids’ activities, presentations by environmental and nature organizations, and demonstrations including the return of Vermont Game Warden canine units.
