Representatives from Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative traveled to Washington, D.C., joining more than 1,200 electric cooperative leaders from across the nation at the annual Legislative Conference. There, they met with members of Congress and Biden administration officials and pushed for policies that ensure reliable and affordable electricity for rural America.
Representing LMRE on the trip were LMRE Board Director Judy Pickworth, President/CEO Ed VanHoose, Chief Strategy Officer Justis Clifford, Manager of Key Accounts and Economic Development Audrey Flood, and Key Accounts and Economic Development Specialist James Flint.
The Legislative Conference is a chance for Congress to hear directly from their co-op constituents. Meeting House members, senators, and congressional staff to discuss the most pressing issues facing our local communities is a golden opportunity.
Topics covered during this year’s conference included discussing the Environmental Protection Agency’s power plant rule, protecting USDA funding for co-ops, safeguarding rural electric infrastructure, and alleviating supply chain challenges.
The top priority for co-op leaders during the conference was to voice strong opposition to the EPA’s power plant proposal, which threatens reliability by setting unrealistic deadlines and relying on technology that is not yet ready for wide-scale use.
