August Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* Use Marcum's 18-6-12 Fertilizer on Bermuda and Zoysia grass.

* Apply  Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone II to prevent grubs and to control the mole and vole population.

* Expect some leaf fall, a normal reaction to drought.

* Mowing heights for cool-season turf grasses should be 3" during hot, dry summer months. Gradually raise mowing height of Bermuda grass lawns from 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches.

Chump's Chatter

Am I watering too much or too little?

Most of the time, the signs of over watering are usually leaves that begin to turn ____?

If a plant starts to die from the top -____/outside-in with dry crunchy leaves, it's more than likely been _____.

Dahlia's Answers: Yellow, Top-down/outside-in, Underwatered

Dahlia's Dirt!

Oklahoma's extreme weather conditions, regardless of the season, keep us asking the same question year after year. Am I watering too much or too little?

The signs of over watering are usually leaves that start turning yellow from the base of the tree or plant. The leaves that are growing closest to the trunk of the tree from the inside out will also start to turn yellow.
If a plant starts to die from the top-down/outside-in with dry crunchy leaves, it's not getting enough water. These plants usually look good at the bottom where the water supply only makes it up the tree so far.

If caught in the earlier stages, a plant that has been underwatered is an easier fix, more so than if the plant has been over watered.

See Marcum's Watering Guidelines for detailed information.

Ramen Cranberry Salad

This recipe is a favorite of mine and has made the rounds to many family reunions over the years.

I decided to give an all time favorite recipe a new twist by adding cranberries. Not only did it add a pop of color, it also added a more robust flavor.

Try your hand at changing recipes and personalizing them with your own secret ingredients. After all, you are the chef!
