A Message from Pastor Danie
How many people do you know who have a negative image of the church in their minds? Honestly, there are enough reasons not to like the church – to think of it as the (somewhat unfriendly) building, or arrogant religious claims, or rampant two faces. I too, feel the weight of all the negative experiences people have had in the church or which they have suffered at the hands of church people.

To me, there is another side to the church, one I experienced again this past Sunday when we worshiped outdoors in the parking lot. I experienced the signs of God in Spirit moving over the waters, bringing new life to us all.

And I thought, sitting somewhat to the back, observing, experiencing, that worship at Columbia is a positive experience of church, that it is a happy place of welcome and laughter, of exploding joy and quiet seriousness, healing, hope, friends, family and new life.

Columbia is a place where we care for the homeless and visit the elderly. This is where a group works to get new bed sheets and pillows to local shelters; another group reaches out to mentor young people who would never be seen in a church; where we have a bigger group teaching children to “Trust Jesus” and be excited about God; where we support ministry partners in Senegal, Zambia, Haiti. Here we learn to worship, to pray, to encounter God, join a new family, find a new purpose, and get in touch with God in Spirit, who helps us to carry out our purpose.

Here at Columbia we bring our small contributions of faith, money, time and talent, and discover that when we pool this and worship together, God is greater than the sum total of the parts.

Blessings,
Danie
