May 2024 Newsletter

Welcome spring!

We greet you with open arms after a long winter. Spring is the season of renewal! Spring brings kittens, needing our care. It brings more stray dogs, enjoying the warmer weather and all the scents of the earth coming alive.

It’s also the season of new beginnings.  In our last issue we shared that we had submitted two large grants; one to expand our spay/neuter and wellness services, the other to make necessary improvements to be in full compliance with the upcoming New York State Shelter Standards laws.

We hoped to be sharing news of the start of a new chapter this spring, but unfortunately, while we were very close in securing grant funding, we faced lots of competition and the funds were limited. Not to be deterred by this setback, we’ll be applying for state funding again in late summer or fall. And, we’ll be seeking alternative funding sources to help with the expansion of our spay/neuter services.

So, stay tuned. In the meantime, we have lots of other news to share.

It’s Kitten Season!

Typically April showers brings May Meowers. But, the ground hog predicted an early kitten season this year. The calls to take in kittens needing care and nursing mamas started in early March and continue to come in almost daily.

On St Patrick’s Day, we welcomed a stray female who delivered six little bundles of joy shortly after arrival. Mama and babies are doing well but need to grow a bit more before they will be ready for adoption. We have lots of adorable bundles of fluff just waiting for you!

Adoptions Updates

From her adopter – Update on Rose Madison - “Omg she is so wonderful. I have a hard time thinking she could have ended up being a colony cat forever so thank you and your staff for recognizing the difference!! It breaks my heart knowing that could have been her life.”

Rose Madison - cat

From our caring staff…….”Gramms met her person today and is on her way home!!!!

She had been here for 2 and a half years. Happy tears 🙂”

From Roy’s Adopter…..

“It’s been over a year since my last email, so I wanted to send an update. Roy is seriously the sweetest cat and everyone loves him. His eyes are doing great and he is a favorite at the Cornell Ophthalmology Service. He loves snuggling in the cat bed with our 19 year old kitty, watching the puppy bowl and watching bird and animal videos!”

Lil Liv

Lil’ Liv was so timid when she arrived at the shelter she wouldn’t come out of her kennel and shook from fear of the unknown. After a few months, as Livie learned to trust and to love, she was adopted by a wonderful loving family who writes “She is just the sweetest thing! We are having a great time. She hops, prances, wrestles (with Winston), snuggles, kisses, enjoys our hikes and is having so much fun.”

Wags to Riches Celebrates 15 Years !

It seems like just yesterday that we were scouring the streets of Watkins Glen in search of a location to try our hand at a resale boutique. But that was 15 years ago

We thought it was an idea worth exploring. If it didn’t work, well, at least we tried. Who knew that 15 years later Wags to Riches would still be going strong? In fact, stronger than ever! The revenues from Wags to Riches have funded the care of countless homeless animals. But, Wags to Riches wouldn’t be what it is today without the hard work of so many dedicated volunteers who spend countless hours, sorting, marking, merchandising, and putting their best paws forward to welcome customers to the shop. And, we couldn’t have sustained our business without the support of our community and our loyal Wags to Riches customers – two and four legged alike!

So, please join us as we celebrate 15 years in business on Saturday May 18th with great sales, refreshments and announcing our raffle winners!

Raffle tickets are available for $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased at Wags to Riches through May 18, 2024. 100% of the proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Humane care of shelter animals
