Breakfast, 2024 Service and Leadership Awards, and business meeting. All members are welcome.
The Service and Leadership Awards are bestowed in recognition of outstanding contributions to our community, exemplary behavior, inspired leadership, a sense of civility, and values consistent with the mission and values of Kiwanis International.
There will also be meetings of the club board and foundation trustees and officers. Please attend to contribute to a quorum for a discussion and vote on the proposal that our foundation be the named beneficiary of the 2024 Weston Kiwanis Reservoir Run half marathon and 5K foot races and kids fun run.

The Kiwanis Club of Norwalk annual bicycle safety rodeo has grown into a city-wide movement to get everyone out and moving safely in the Norwalk Open Streets: Walk Bike & Roll Festival for a day of outdoor fun and active transportation event.

GREEN ON THE GREEN

Last Friday, Weston celebrated Earth Day with the first Green on The Green event from 4 - 6 p.m. on Weston's new town green.
Participants: Reed Ameden, Karen Chrisley, Jennifer Barron, Tom Failla, Phyllis Gary, Hutch Hutchison, Dan Lerner, Steve Thomas, and Bob Uzenoff.
A number of community organizations participated in the observance. Actions: Kiwanis's presence was under our new tent set up We promoted the 50th anniversary of Green Up Day on April 27 (the next day, always the last Saturday in April) and gave out vouchers for a bag to go out on town-wide litter patrol along with a tree seedling bonus courtesy of the town tree warden and Eversource vegetation managers.
The Kiwanis table also hosted the town tree warden and conservation officer, who gave out information on removing invasive vines from trees and showed recently sprouted acorns from the Norfield Red Oak. Phyllis Gary bought a pizza for the table.
Kiwanians donated a combined 22 hours of community service in this event.

GREEN UP DAY

More than 80 bags (courtesy of Kiwanis) and 60 tree/shrub seedlings (courtesy of the town tree warden and Eversource) were given out. This year, many participants took care of getting bags to transfer stations before 2:30 p.m. closing. Steve Thomas picked up the balance late on Saturday morning and early afternoon. Tom Failla picked up early Sunday morning at Weston, School, Lords Highway, and Bisceglie. | |
This year, banners and flyers were professionally designed, and three new and reusable professional banners, using the new design, were charged to the Community Service Committee account. Also, the back of an old banner was repurposed with hand lettering for Green Up Day use. Finally the supply of True Value lawn and leaf bags was replenished (150 for $127 from Wilton Hardware) and about 120 remain in the Kiwanis section of the carriage barn storage area for next year. Bob Uzenoff and Jim McMorris took photos. Tom Failla is awaiting permission to use photos from the Cub Scouts.

Note that several members who regularly help out were unable to participate because of out-of-town travel for family occasions or illness.
Ten Weston High School Kiwanis Key Clubbers also joined the effort and patrolled School Road around high school and middle school.

Other groups included Cub Scouts at Bisceglie-Scribner Park, Daisies at the town hall, library, and Hurlbutt playgrounds. Assistant Norfield Pastor Jack Mahoney and friend - Norfield Church to Weston Rd and Jarvis property, Karen and Phyllis Town Center, Carl and neighbors Merry Lane, Dan Newtown Turnpike, Weston Road from Briar Oak to Norfield, Dan and Harry S., Ladder Hill South - Harry F., Lisa Brodlie and neighbors Birch Hill, Leigh Michl Lords Highway from Birch Hill to Old Hyde, Nicci Weiss from Sustainability patrolled Colony with Hutch, Tracy Pennoyer from Norfield Church and Aspetuck Land Trust patrolled Old Hyde and Kettle Creek. |  | |
Sam Berg, Vegetation Manager for the Eversource distribution division, and Matt Hellman, vegetation manager for Eversource transmission divisions, once again participated by donating and handing out with the tree warden tree seedlings, mostly cherry, Kousa dogwood, spicebush, viburnum, and witch hazel.
By the way, both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts unfortunately had weekend campouts scheduled and could not participate this year but offered to patrol areas on another date in May.
