Dear Covenant Family,
A few weeks ago, I helped with the installation of The Rev. Steven Blonder-Adams as the ninth Senior Pastor of Old Stone Church. It was a day of celebration and hope, and we enjoyed a dinner together after the service. Outside the front doors of their sanctuary, I noticed a statue with Jesus’ words- “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) The statue is not the only reminder, for nearby there are men and women begging for coins and bread.
At Covenant, we too have guests at our doors who suffer from lack of nourishment, warm clothing, or shelter. Without knowing their stories, it’s difficult to discern the real need. Giving money directly is often not the best choice. Food may be needed, or a connection with available social services. If you encounter such a guest, please greet them with the love of Christ, ask their name and welcome them to stay for worship on Sundays, or just to sit and rest inside where it’s safe and warm during the week. Custodians and staff are available to help if needed. By your efforts at hospitality and radical welcome at our open doors, you are the hands and feet of Christ.
Our Presbytery has a wonderful Ministry Advocating with Homeless Persons where you can find opportunities to learn with NEOCH (Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless) and opportunities to serve meals with Metanoia Project. Covenant member Bob Ault serves on this ministry and could help you get involved.
Whether it is caring for our neighbors in need, or voting prayerfully, or honoring our Veterans (11/11), or stepping up to help in times of crisis, our citizenship in this democracy is an important piece of our Christian discipleship. If you need a reminder of how it is possible for Americans to pull together, watch this 12-minute video Rev. Diana Butler Bass posted in her blog this week. It’s about “a little remembered story from 9/11, and regular people stepping up to do the right thing no matter what.”
Peace be with you,
Pastor Jessie
