Day of Service with Youth Spirit Artworks Gives Members a Chance to Help Our Local Community
On Sunday, Youth Spirit Artworks invited our members to their office in Berkeley to help in the demo, build and rebuild of wooden planter boxes used to decorate the YSA Tiny Home Village - a space dedicated to housing homeless youth. These planter boxes will be used to provide areas for growing food and beautifying the space for their residents (something that we will assist with again in a future Day of Service!).

May 17th | 6pm - 7:30pm
While Architecture’s three dimensions remain stoically timeless, lighting is the 4th dimension, expressing passage of time, while adding depth and focus. Though seemingly ethereal, Lighting’s purpose can be crystal clear; deepening meaning, function, comfort, and utility while supporting the classic attributes of “Firmitas, Utilitas, and Venustas.” (Strength, Function, and Delight) This survey course will open your eyes to the history, language, terminology, technology, and methodology of lighting design.

Michael Pyatok, FAIA, has been an architect and professor of architectural design for 55 years. Since opening his office in 1984, he has designed over 40,000 units of housing for lower-income households in the US and abroad. At the heart of Mike’s work is the participatory design process he uses to deeply involve residents, community members, and stakeholders in the revitalization of low-income communities and strengthening of mixed-income neighborhoods. Using hands-on modeling exercises, Mike helps communities identify their core needs and plans how to meet those needs through quality design.

Openings in Exterior Walls by Jonathon Clark
As California continues to wrestle with a housing crisis, many of the projects that I work on are getting more dense. I’m sure there are many reasons that contribute to the densification of residential projects, among them are high land costs, desirable location, project financial feasibility, etc. As projects get closer to other properties and even the different parts of a project get close to each other, we as architects need to be aware of the building requirements of these dense projects.

AIA East Bay Acts to Stop Legislation That Hurts Architects
The AIA East Bay Board of Directors sent a letter to the California legislature strongly recommending the California Architects Board (CAB) to hold another public hearing on the proposed advertising regulation CCR 135. The growing awareness of CCR 135 among licensed architects has caused significant concern to be expressed about the assumptions made regarding the proposed regulation, the impact it will have on licensed architects, and the presumed benefit to the public. Read the letter signed by us and multiple other chapters at the link below.

Bay Area Computational/Virtual Architecture Critique Group
Delta_Ark Studios (Ari Kalinowski) is running a critique group for computational, virtual and robotic architecture. If you're interested in grasshopper, architecture for game worlds or VR, complex systems and/or robotics, please take a look at their meetup page and apply! They are trying to keep the group small and relatively intimate. They'll start online, and then slowly move to in person; so, it's preferable if you're within a stone's throw of Oakland. Their first critique is Monday March 28th, but they will be meeting weekly or every two weeks after that.
