Los Amigos Scholars Receive Prestigious Gates Scholarship

Los Amigos High School valedictorian Brianna Bayliss and Salutatorian Ashlie Benitez were awarded the highly-selective Gates Scholarship, a prestigious college scholarship awarded to only 300 students across the nation each year. This is the second year in a row that two students from Los Amigos have earned this outstanding college scholarship which covers the full cost of attendance, not already covered by financial aid and renewable every year.

Bayliss said she is grateful that after working to earn as many scholarships as possible, she landed in the most ideal situation she could have hoped for as she enters college. She plans to attend UCLA in the fall to major in Mechanical Engineering.

Benitez, who is deciding between attending Harvard or NYU in the fall, said the Gates Scholarship represents endless opportunities for her future.

GGUSD Students Spread Mental Health Awareness in Video Competition

GGUSD high schools are participating in a Choose Wellness campaign video contest with nearly $5,000 in cash prizes going to participating clubs. Students were encouraged to create videos that communicate the need to make mental health and wellness a priority and to end the stigma associated with getting help during a mental health crisis.

The contest was open to all GGUSD high school clubs or programs to engage the student voice and perspective about the importance of mental health and wellness. The grant for the contest was funded by the Illumination Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of mental health professional development trainings and resources to the district.

The videos can be viewed on the district’s website and YouTube channel from May 6-20th. The video receiving the most YouTube likes will win the top prize.

GGUSD Celebrates CA Day of the Teacher and School Nurse Day

This week, GGUSD celebrated California’s Day of the Teacher and National School Nurse Day!

GGUSD has the best teachers, librarians and nurses in the state who put their hearts into serving students and equipping all students with the academic and personal skills for lifelong success. Our schools are filled with joyful learners because our teachers deliver engaging instruction in warm and welcoming classrooms. Our school nurses work extremely hard to serve the needs of the whole child and went above and beyond during the pandemic to keep our students safe, serving on the front lines supporting our CARE Rooms, providing instructions for COVID-19 testing, and more.

Below, Paine and Faylane elementary schools hosted special celebrations for their teachers.

Ralston Intermediate Students Earn Medals in Elite Eagle Mile Race

Ralston Intermediate School provides many opportunities for students to compete and participate in a variety of Physical Education activities. All students in 7th and 8th grade run the mile in their PE class and are encouraged to improve their own personal time each run, even if it’s only by one second. Physical Education teachers support and motivate Ralston students to stay active and run their best mile time.

Many Ralston scholars surpass the expected time of 10:00 min. Each year, scholars have the opportunity to compete in the Elite Eagle Mile race. Ralston’s best runners compete in  5, 6, and 7 minute mile races.

Congrats to Ralston's fastest runners:  Brady Tran (6:10); Kobi Gandy (5:35) and David Carlsson (5:20).
