“A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth, and not simply to close the gap between the affluent and those who must be satisfied with the crumbs falling from the table, but above all to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being.”
– Pope Francis

Poverty Awareness Month

January is Poverty Awareness Month, a month-long initiative to call attention to poverty in our country.  According to www.povertyusa.org, in the United States there are currently more than 38 million individuals living in poverty and 1.5 million children experiencing homelessness. Poverty not only disrupt lives but creates inter-generational issues that permeate through families making escape from the cycle of poverty extremely difficult.

For those living in poverty, it can often be difficult to access basic necessities- including food, shelter, clothing, etc. Food insecurity linked to poverty contributes to health issues such as diabetes and obesity, as many of the most readily available and affordable foods tend to be lacking in nutritional value. Poverty among children can contribute to missing school, or under-performing in the classroom due to hunger and stress.

Learn more about the web of poverty.
Poverty is commonly associated with a lack of finances but it also can take other forms. People can be lacking in their physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual and relational abundance which can create roadblocks towards growth and sustainability. It’s a complicated and often misunderstood combination of issues that keeps people immobile. Approaching the issue of poverty in a holistic way allows us to better identify the challenges faced by each individual in their goal to escape the web of poverty.

At Uplift People of Elk Grove, we strive to support our participants through each stage of their journey. Our program is intentionally created to be flexible so it can adjust to the ever-changing needs of our participants.
