It's Time for Change!

After encouragement and support from residents and family, I have entered my name for Mayor of Markham in the coming Municipal election. I believe it's time for change and ask for your support in October. You can make a contribution to my campaign here.

Along with local Ward 8 Councillor Isa Lee, I was pleased to attend the 25th Anniversary celebration for the Vedic Cultural Centre. We appreciate the warm reception from all those in attendance and hope that this wonderful building continues to serve the community for at least another 25 years. Happy Anniversary.

It was a special afternoon seeing one of my former students and her children at the Multiple Sclerosis Car Show held at the Bloomington GO station. This is a terrible disease that shows no age favourites. Let's help eradicate MS.

As part of ongoing Council work there will be a Community Information meeting regarding the proposed rezoning of the BMW dealership on Kennedy Road. Come to the virtual meeting this Wednesday August 24 at 7pm and see what's being proposed - details.

West Nile Positive Mosquitoes

The first West Nile positive mosquitoes have been found in Vaughan.

Don't let mosquitos keep you and your family from enjoying the outdoors. The best protection against West Nile is to try and avoid mosquito bites when you are outside. While the chance of being bitten by a West Nile carrying mosquito are low, everyone should follow some simple steps to lower your risks including:

  • covering up between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are active
  • use insect repellent
  • dress in light colours.

More information about West Nile can be found here.

Upcoming Art Sale

The Varley-McKay Art Foundation is pleased to present the Art of Plenty Art Show and Sale fundraiser at the McKay Art Centre between October 4 and October 16. Join in and view a variety of artworks produced by local artists. A portion of the sale of each artwork helps the Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham continue to provide support to the Varley Art Gallery.

Tickets for the Art of Plenty Art Show and Sale opening reception are now available. The opening reception will take place at the Varley Art Gallery on October 4 starting at 6:30pm. Tickets are $20 and include exclusive early access to the art show and sale - tickets here.

This year's Terry Fox Run will take place in person on Sunday September 18. There will be two events in the City of Markham with runs taking place in Unionville and Thornhill.

The Unionville event is seeking volunteers before and on Run Day. All activities are eligible for community service hours if you know a high school student looking for hours. If you're able to help, more information is available here.

It's the return of the signature fundraiser for Union Villa, the Dinner Party, which will be held at Angus Glen Golf Club on Friday November 4.

This year’s theme, With Love, Union Villa, represents a sentimental message of deep appreciation for your continued support throughout these challenging times. Your commitment has been essential and has allowed them to do what they do best, care for their residents.

This year's event kicks off with an online silent auction on October 24 at 4pm and concludes on November 5 at 5pm. The in-person Dinner Party on November 4 will welcome guests to Angus Glen with delicious food, fine wines, a raffle and entertainment.

The net proceeds of the event will be invested in programs, nursing equipment and technology which are all crucial to making the long-term care experience better for their residents. More detail about the event can be found here.

Please be advised that 19th Avenue will be closed from Woodbine Avenue to Warden Avenue for 11 Days:

  • September 1 and 2
  • September 5 to 9
  • September 12 to 15

The road will be closed from 9am to 3 pm on these days so that Alectra Distribution Poles poles can be installed for the new Markham film studio.

Upgrades to the Unionville GO station are complete - learn more and you can even take a virtual tour. There may still be a few loose ends that need to be cleaned up but the crews are doing the final work.
