Fraternal Order of Police Meeting |

June 5: The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) LA County Lodge 1 hosted its monthly board meeting on Saturday. PPOA President Tab Rhodes and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. joined a number of retired — but still very dedicated — PPOA members for this Zoom video conference.
Full dues-paying PPOA members also are FOP Lodge 1 members — this membership provides workplace legal protections through the FOP Legal Defense Plan and other significant benefits. The LA County Lodge is one of 30 lodges in the California State FOP, and PPOA is thankful for the diligent work of State Lodge President (and former PPOA President) Roger Mayberry.

June 7: Last Friday (6/4/21), PPOA began receiving phone calls and emails from members about a JDIC message sent by the Department, regarding modifications to the study materials of the upcoming Lieutenant’s Promotional Examination. The information provided to candidates, and the revelation that the study guide link was not static for purposes of the exam was communicated to PPOA, not by the Department, but instead by membership. The discovery of these modifications was especially problematic as PPOA and the Department were in continuous discussions in the Meet and Confer process and this issue had not been disclosed.
PPOA once aware, immediately contacted the Department and worked over the weekend to schedule an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM on Monday, June 7th. As a result of the meeting, the Department agreed to suspend any future revisions/redactions of the Department Manuals effective June 4, 2021 through the NEW examination date of August 7, 2021.

Meeting with California Department of Justice |

June 8: PPOA participated in a virtual meeting with the California Office of the Attorney General, which is conducting an independent civil rights "pattern and practice" investigation of the LA County Sheriff's Department. The intention of this meeting was for the Supervising Deputy Attorney General to introduce herself and her staff and to discuss their process for conducting the investigation. Participants from PPOA included President Tab Rhodes, Executive Director Quint and legal counsel Jim Cunningham. PPOA is committed to protect members who could be potentially impacted by changes to the terms or conditions of employment if suggested by the Attorney General's Office.

PPOA Insurance Committee Meeting |

June 8: PPOA’s Insurance Committee, including President Rhodes, Board Member Chris Lee, and others met to discuss the pending re-opening of County Buildings on June 15, 2021. Topics included continued development of the business plan and infrastructure of the PPOA Insurance Agency as well as addressing the needs of those insurance vendors who utilize the PPOA payroll deduction slot, which provides convenient premium payment options for County Employees. Updates and recommendations from this meeting were presented during the PPOA Board of Directors Meeting the next day.

June 9: The monthly PPOA Board of Directors meeting took place on Wednesday. Directors present included: President Rhodes, Vice President Jim Blankenship (who was officially sworn into the VP seat for the second time in his 27 years of dedicated service to the PPOA Board), Secretary Tony Coleman, Treasurer Robert Maus, and Directors Joel Barnett (officially sworn in to replace retiring Commander Carlos Marquez), Nancy Escobedo, Henry Jimenez, Joyce Kato, Chris Lee, Jose Rios and Tony Romo. Collectively, the PPOA board brings approximately 300 years of county experience to the table. |

Sheriff Discusses Current Events |

June 9: Sheriff Villanueva hosted a Facebook live stream on Wednesday to discuss current events, including the homeless crisis, busting the largest Marijuana grow in LA County, LASD academy classes, and more.

SCV Station Jailer Meeting |
|
June 10: PPOA representatives continued their Meet and Confer process with LASD Patrol Division executives. Discussions centered on the Station Jailer positions for the new Santa Clarita Valley Station scheduled to open this July. At this meeting, PPOA was able to finalize Station Jailer staffing solutions and remains committed to identify funding sources.

Meeting re: Security Officers Impacted by Contract Reduction |

June 10: PPOA met with LASD executives and command staff from County Services Bureau regarding the Executive Office of the Board's decision to reduce contract security services by eliminating 30 Sheriff's Security Officer (SSO) positions. This ill-advised decision will result in professionally-trained Security Officers being replaced by private security guards, effective July 1, 2021. These SSOs include 23 currently assigned to the Hall of Administration, 4 assigned to the Hall of Records and 3 assigned to the CEO South Campus.
Meeting participants from PPOA included President Rhodes, Board Member Jimenez and Executive Director Quint.
President Rhodes has personally contacted County Supervisors and significant labor partners regarding these long-time union jobs being contracted out to non-county, non-union hired help. "This action begs a serious question," said President Rhodes. "Is this the beginning of a disturbing pattern to replace trained, dedicated unionized county workers with cheap labor?"

Funeral for San Bernardino County Sheriff's Sergeant
Killed in the Line of Duty

June 11: PPOA joined fellow public safety representatives from throughout the state yesterday at the funeral services for fallen San Bernardino County Sheriff's Sergeant Dominic Vaca.
Sergeant Vaca was among a group of deputies ambushed by a suspect who led authorities in a high-speed pursuit into the desert. Sergeant Vaca was struck by gunfire and the deputies returned fire, killing the suspect. Tragically, Sergeant Vaca succumbed to his wounds after being airlifted to a hospital.
Sergeant Dominic Vaca is survived by his wife, an 11-year old daughter and a 4-month old daughter. He is the sixth line-of-duty death in California to date in 2021
