Letter from our Director Firm Foundations for ALICE Children  A large number of adults in our community struggle financially, making it difficult to offer their children a firm foundation when it comes to housing, food, health care, education and more.  In 2019, 28% of Charlotte County children lived in a home with two working adults whose income still didn’t meet the cost of basic needs. The Giving Challenge supports our mission to break the cycle of poverty. Gifts from donors like you support the work we do to help ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) through free tax preparation services, help with rent, mortgage, and utilities, as well as our Community Collaborations designed to tackle the root causes of poverty. We have a big and bold goal this year to reach $32,000 in the 2022 Giving Challenge. It takes each and every one of us doing our part to make this happen. Connect with Us Pop-up Giving Station UWCC staff and volunteers will be at the Military Heritage Museum (900 W. Marion Avenue in Punta Gorda) on April 26 from 12-6PM. We invite you to join us to connect, collaborate and show your support for UWCC and nine other local nonprofits. Use this opportunity to make your Giving Challenge donation in person. There will be festivities, music, trained K-9 demonstration, wild animals, vintage Corvettes, Calendar Girls, Conquistadors, food trucks, free admission to the museum and more! Good Things Volunteer Income Tax Assistance It has been yet another successful VITA year. We are so proud of all our volunteers who together served over 700 clients and returned back over $800,000 back into their pockets.

Each volunteer played a crucial role and together put in over 2,600 hours. Their dedication is inspiring, and we hope to inspire more people to volunteer for VITA next tax season. The more volunteers we have the more lives we can change in our community.  Our clients are very grateful for our tax services, and many said they wouldn't know where to go if not for our program. We are not stopping and will be growing each year and making a bigger impact in our community.
