Principal's Message

We are now a few weeks into the New Year and I am so impressed by the energy that I see all around me. Part of this energy that I have witnessed first hand is student voice. Recently students have been engaging with me both in person and email about their own learning.

Having students recognize the power of their voice and be able to advocate for themselves, is energizing for me as a Principal. This has also led to deeper connections with students and families.

Our staff has been busy planning for upcoming field trips and guest speakers. We are so thankful to have the partnership with our Site Council to make these student experiences a reality.

This week our Student Services team provided an important message regarding Vaping to our 7th and 8th graders during Level Up! Please see the family resources and pictures below. Also a reminder that next Thursday is the last day of Quarter 2.

I invite you to come and see the talent of our Middle School students next week in our Winter Play, SeedFolks. Please see below for ticket information and performance dates.

Boy's Basketball Spectator Information

Due to limited space/capacity we will need to limit the amount of spectators attending the middle school boys basketball games. Spectators will be limited to parents/guardians of players playing in the current game for both home and away teams. Teachers, friends and students will not be allowed to attend games. We apologize for this inconvenience but must be proactive in keeping our players, spectators, coaches and officials as safe as possible with limited space for seating in the field house and allow for parents/guardians to have space to attend the games.

Winter Play

Please join us for SLP Middle School Theater's winter production of Seedfolks by Paul Fleishman. From the publisher's description of the show: "The first year in the life of a community garden unfolds in this 'spoken musical,' adapted from the award-winning children's novel of the same name." Performances are Jan 26-28 at the Middle School Performing Arts Center. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.

Girls Lacrosse Clinic

The SLP Girls High School lacrosse team is pleased to announce we will be hosting our second youth lacrosse clinic on Friday March 3rd from 6pm-8pm in the Middle School Gymnasium. The high school coaches and players will take youth players through drills, techniques and game play to enhance their skills, learn more about the game of lacrosse, and have a great time!

The clinic is open to players in K-8th grade. The cost of the clinic is $30 per player. No experience is necessary to play and we will have sticks and goggles to borrow, if needed. Please have your player bring water and a mouth guard. We are excited for the second clinic of the year and hope this helps get players ready for the spring season!

See the flyer below for more details - the registration link is below, and a QR code is on the flyer!

Family/Caregiver Resources

During Large Group Advisory (now called Level Up) over the next two weeks, students will be learning about Vaping. School Counselor, School Social Workers and our School Resource Officer will be presenting from Catch My Breath Curriculum.  Lessons will be differentiated by grade level.  For parent and caregiver information, please click here.  The website offers supports to parents and caregivers including how to assess your student’s risk and how to have conversations with your student.

Consider asking your student(s):

“I heard you learned about Vaping during Advisory this week in the Performing Arts Center”

  • What did you learn about the dangers of vaping?
  • What did you learn about the chemicals in a vape?
  • Who can you ask for help or if you have a question?

District News

We’re Improving Weather-Related Notifications

St. Louis Park Public Schools is making sure families receive weather-related announcements in a more timely manner with these improvements:

  • Weather-related announcements will be prioritized in our notification system, which will significantly speed up the time it takes for families to receive calls.

  • Our system will now call up to two contact numbers listed for each student. Previously the default was to only contact one unless otherwise designated.

  • We now have a solution in place to mitigate the issue of SLP emails going to spam.

  • Families can now receive communications in their preferred language, such as Somali and Spanish. If we are unable to record a multilingual call, the family receives the phone message in English and the email in the preferred language.

  • In addition to local news outlets airing school closings/delays, we are expanding our media partners to include KMNV La Raza Radio and other language-specific news agencies.

  • In the coming months, we will begin the process of enabling text message notifications.

Want to receive District emails and phone recordings in Spanish or Somali?

Families can now receive district-level communications (emails and phone recordings) in a preferred language such as Spanish or Somali. If you wish to update your language preferences, please contact our front office staff and ask that the preferred guardian language be updated in the student information system (PowerSchool). This will ensure you receive district-level communications such as closures and emergencies in your preferred messages. Whenever possible, we will do our best to ensure SLP phone recordings go out in your preferred language.
