Caregivers and Community Members,
As we enter the last chunk of our school year and the weather begins to warm, I feel a sense of renewed optimism and energy to continue to deliver a joyful and meaningful school experience for our students. I guess that is the nature of spring. It gives us the feeling that better days are ahead. The sun shines longer and the anticipation of summer is right around the corner. With that in mind, there are many special events on the horizon for our students, some geared towards growing our understanding of the world around us, some geared towards understanding where we are in our educational journey and some geared towards just plain fun. Please be on the lookout for continued updates for such events in my biweekly newsletter and in classroom communications. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at khaley@wrvsu.org.
Speaking of upcoming events, I’m sure you are aware by now that there is a bond vote on a potential expansion to the school coming up on May 7th. All registered voters should have already received the ballot for the vote via mail. You can also vote in person at the town hall on the 7th. If you would like more information about this proposed project, check out this link: Sharon Elementary School Proposed Building Expansion
I continue to be available at Maple Fields every other Tuesday morning from 8:00 am until 9:00 am for a “coffee hour” to meet with folks to discuss all things related to school. This is not a time to talk about individual students or staff, but a time to discuss broader topics such as curriculum, educational opportunities for our students, staff development, or whatever else is on your mind. During these conversations, I don’t always have immediate answers, but I’m always willing to reflect and get back to someone if that is the case. I also enjoy listening to people because their input gives me valuable insight into what folks are thinking as it relates to school. My next trip to Maple Fields will be this coming Tuesday, May 7th.
I hope everyone enjoys the transition into May. Hopefully, we start to see those May flowers emerge and the sounds of lawnmowers take the place of snowplows scraping by!
Respectfully,
Keenan Haley
Principal

In second grade, during outdoor education we have been focusing in on spring! What spring looks like and sounds like! A book we are reading talks about how to be a kid scientist which peaked the interest of many in this class. We grabbed binoculars, bird sound identifiers, bird seed, and picture cards and headed out into Williams Woods. We sat around the fire pit and listened and observed birds in their natural habitats. We spotted nests, and heard a lot of amazing birds. After hearing them, one person would find the picture in the key ring and show everyone which bird we were listening to. Then we tallied which ones we heard the most of, and where we saw the birds the most. We will continue to collect data and graph the amount of each type of bird. We heard northern cardinals, black capped chickadees, pine warbler, and dark eyed juncos.

Third graders have been working very hard lately. They have truly found their learning stride and it's been very exciting to watch them progress into, wait for it…fourth graders. Recently in math, we have been mastering our multiplication facts through games and lessons with Mr. Paul. Perimeter and area have been the focus for us as well. The third graders just completed a math activity dealing with area where they had to design an agriculture farm. We have also been getting back into science with a unit on weather/climate. We have been learning about temperature and geography i.e. countries that are located near the equator have warmer climates. As we have been doing this we are learning about the seven continents and other major geographic features. In ELA we started our Native American research project where the kids will find a tribe to research and will create a non-fiction book. We also started to fill out a map of where the most popular Native American tribes were historically located. Last but certainly not least, we will be going wild leek (ramps) and morel picking in the next couple of weeks and cooking with them. We have a very busy last seven weeks but we are looking forward to warmer weather and mastering third-grade standards. Let’s go!

CAR SEAT SAFETY
One of the most important jobs you have as a parent is keeping your child safe when they are riding in a vehicle. Proper use of car safety seats helps keep children safe. Parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of serious injuries and deaths by up to 80% by making sure children are properly buckled in the correct car seat or booster seat.
No one seat is the "best" or "safest."The best seat is the one that fits your child's size, is correctly installed, fits well in your vehicle, and is used properly every time you drive.
Children should stay in a booster seat until adult seat belts fit correctly, typically when children reach about 4 feet 9 inches in height and are 8 to 12 years of age. Most children will not fit in a seat belt alone until 10 to 12 years of age. All children younger than 13 years should ride in the back seat. This means all children at SES should be in the back seat!
A seat belt fits properly when the shoulder belt lies across the middle of the chest and shoulder, not the neck or throat; the lap belt is low and snug across the upper thighs, not the belly; and the child is tall enough to sit against the vehicle seat back with their knees bent over the edge of the seat without slouching and can comfortably stay in this position throughout the trip.
Be a good role model. Make sure you always wear your seat belt. This will help your child form a lifelong habit of buckling up.

Let's BeSMART, together!
Safety is always an adult responsibility. It is on all of us to work together to prevent firearm violence and to avoid the harm and tragedy that shootings of any kind can cause in the spaces in which we live, learn, work, and play. Always assume that kids are curious and impulsive. They may handle an unsecured gun even if they've been told not to, which can quickly turn to tragedy. We can all work together to promote awareness about how we can protect our children and our whole school communities by safely storing firearms, realizing the role unsecured firearms play in youth suicide, modeling responsible behavior, and asking about unsecured firearms in other homes your child visits. Thank you for being a partner in these efforts!
We are offering free wire gun locks. If you would like one, please email kstoeckle@wrvsu.org.
