Biology Major Britney Simpson Plans to Become an Oncologist
Britney Simpson is an international student from Jamaica, who came to LaGuardia to pursue a degree in Biology. Losing her father to cancer when she was 13 transformed her interest in science into a passion. She began looking for ways to help people battling the disease and decided to pursue becoming an oncologist. Britney has an innate desire to help others and to make a positive impact on her community. She was previously a member of the CUNY Service Corps and is currently involved in the LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative. In addition, Britney is co-founder and vice president of the LaGuardia Humanitarian Club. Britney believes that to effect change, it is important to be civically engaged and so she was pleased to be selected for the Civic Fellowship Program, working with LaGuardia’s government affairs team. For Britney, being a Civic Fellow has been monumental in helping her understand the inner workings of New York City government and the significant role it plays in our neighborhoods. ACE Student Gregory Woythaler Uses Mental Health Experiences to Serve Others
With a bachelor's degree in speech pathology from Queens College and a loving family, including a wife and two-year-old daughter, Gregory Woythaler was in a good place in his life. But he had a desire to use his personal experiences to serve the needs of others. So, he applied to LaGuardia’s Mental Health Peer Specialist Training Program, a workforce initiative that teaches students how to use their own lived experience with mental health challenges and/or trauma to become peer support workers in the human services sector. Gregory flourished in the program and mastered the internship interview process with guidance and encouragement from staff as well as classmates. With additional program support that included preparation to take the New York State certification exam, employment readiness training, and placement assistance, Gregory was able to turn his internship at the Institute for Community Living (ICL) into a job as a Care Coordinator at ICL.
