NESC SCRUBS Camp

The NESC welcomed 361 Grade 5 students and their educators to the Lake Region State College campus on April 4 and 5, 2024 for the NESC SCRUBS Camp. The annual regional Scrubs Camp event sparks interest in rural health care and grows awareness of Lake Region career opportunities beyond high school for our NESC students. LETRS®: "Everyone Should Take This!"

The NESC supported 20 educators in Volume I and 18 educators in Volume II of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS®) throughout the 2023-24 school year. This was an in-depth professional learning series co-facilitated by NESC Instructional Coach and LETRS® trainer, Dawn Johnson, and Grand Forks-based LETRS® trainer, Tami Schumacher.

LETRS® provides K-12 educators with an in-depth understanding of the science behind teaching literacy and gives them the background and depth of knowledge to teach language and literacy skills to every student. Designed to be the cornerstone of a multiyear, systemic literacy improvement initiative, LETRS® is the most respected comprehensive professional development course for instructors of reading, spelling, and related language skills.

Participating educators were surveyed in April upon completion of their professional learning series. We're excited to share the following results! (n=32)

To what extent do you value the content of the workshop?

Responses were 100% positive, with 88% of participants responding "to a substantial extent!"

  • "Everyone should take this!"

To what extent did this workshop increase your knowledge required to implement the content?

Responses were 100% positive, with 84% of participants responding "to a substantial extent!"

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the past two years and learned a great deal about the brain and what is involved in the process of reading."

To what extent did this workshop increase your skills required to implement the content?

Responses were 100% positive, with 88% of participants responding "to a substantial extent!"

  • "It taught me great strategies to use with my 1st graders. There was a lot I didn't know and now it has me thinking differently."
  • "Knowing and growing in abilities to teach readers how to read."
  • "Learning and utilizing skills to grow my reading and writing instruction."
  • "Teaching is easier to manage if you know what you are doing."

To what extent were the presenters effective in their delivery of the workshop?

Responses were 100% positive, with 91% of participants responding "to a substantial extent!"

  • "Tami & Dawn did a great job as presenters."
  • "Presenters are well-equipped, well experienced - learned a lot from them."
  • "The activities were engaging and helped so much."

We look forward to continuing this work in the 2024-25 school year with our current Volume I cohort of educators as they extend their learning and application through Volume II.

Celebrations!

Teacher Appreciation Week: May 6 - 10, 2024

School families and communities are great about showering educators with recognition and treats during this special week of the year. We too, should do our best to recognize our colleagues during this week - and all year long. Let's celebrate educators who take risks to innovate within their classrooms and collaborate in support of student learning! Or those who step out of their comfort zones to lead professional learning in their schools. And don't forget those who work to grow as professionals or mentor our newest professionals within the field. Let's recognize and show appreciation for each of our colleagues! In her blog post, "Teachers: Do We Appreciate One Another?", Instructional Coach, Lisa Westman, shares great and easy ideas for celebrations that can positively impact your school culture!

Summer Teacher Institute: History and Healing

This year’s free Summer Teacher Institute workshop, “History and Healing: From Assimilation to Reclamation at Fort Totten Boarding School,” is set for July 24-27 at Fort Totten State Historic Site. Initially built as a military post in the late 1800s, the site has also served as a Native American boarding school and tuberculosis preventorium. This workshop will equip teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the requirements detailed in the North Dakota Native American Essential Understandings (NDNAEU). The NDNAEU standards are required by the state effective fall 2024. Native American scholars and experts will lead much of the workshop, which includes visiting historic sites on the Spirit Lake Reservation, talks by former boarding school students, and learning about the Dakota people, cultural reclamation, and other related topics. Our goal is to tell the history of the boarding school era, specifically at Fort Totten, to help educators understand how tribal nations today are working to revive communities and culture that boarding schools aimed to strip away.
