A Message from Our President

As we celebrate Black History Month and embrace the 2024 GUNAA theme, "Loyal to Thee, Our Dear Ole School," I'm honored to lead and represent you as we continue to navigate this pivotal moment in our organization.

Firstly, I commend each of you for your dedication to our cause and the ongoing membership drives. Your commitment ensures our legacy endures, and our impact continues to grow.

Second, I congratulate our new GSU President, Dr. Martin Lemelle, a life member of GUNAA. We look forward to working with him for the betterment of GSU.

In 2024, GUNAA's theme will be "..we are LOYAL to thee, our dear ole school..." so we will focus on committee work and programs to operationalize our loyalty. The signature programs remain a) an alumni mentor for every student at GSU and b) getting every student a computer.

The key performance indicators are 1) Doubling active membership, 2) Increasing fundraising to >$1 Million and 3) Increasing endowments.

With GUNAA elections on the horizon, I encourage everyone to participate actively. Your voice shapes our future, and your vote is paramount in electing leaders who embody our values and support the needed efforts.

Looking ahead, our National Convention promises to be a beacon of inspiration and unity. Save the dates of July 18th - July 20th as we come together to celebrate our achievements and strategize for the road ahead.

Thank you for your unwavering support. Together, let's honor our history, shape our future, and remain loyal to our cause.

L-R: Student Government Association President, Ms. Alexa Johnson; GSU President, Dr. Martin Lemelle; GUNAA National President, Dr. Tammy Richardson; GSU Foundation President, Dr. Janet Barnes

Tell our Story...

This year marks a significant milestone in the rich history of Grambling State University as we celebrate 123 years of excellence in education and community empowerment.

Founded in 1901 as the Colored Industrial and Agricultural School, our institution has stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for generations of students, particularly those from underserved communities.

Grambling State University was named after P.G. Grambling, who was a white sawmill owner in the early 20th century. Grambling donated the land for the school's original campus, and his generosity and support were instrumental in the establishment of the institution

Under the visionary leadership of Charles P. Adams, who served as the university's president for over three decades, Grambling State University expanded its offerings, evolved into a fully accredited institution, and solidified its reputation for academic and athletic excellence and cultural enrichment.

Season 3 - Now Playing

This season's Voices of Grambling Podcast focuses on the cultural exchange program that Grambling had with several PWI's from 1970 to 1980. Of particular note is the first episode with Dr. Lynda Brown-Wright (GSU alum and current provost at Jackson State University), who speaks not only about her passion for social justice, desegregating Lincoln Parish schools as a child, and her time at Grambling but also her cultural exchange at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. However, I would be remiss to not note the five other stories we have of individuals that came to Grambling from PWI's from 1970-1980. They exhibit a real love for Grambling. In all, it is a fascinating look at the history of an impactful program here at Grambling.
