A Message from Pastor Jim
|
|
Greetings Lake Deaton Family,
Thirty years ago today, I returned to the US after living in Honduras for just over two years. I was returning to start my journey at Wesley Biblical Seminary, in Jackson, Mississippi and begin the life of a pastor. A lot had happened during our two years in Honduras; we had adopted our Son Maysson, had a new baby girl, Christina, and even had one that was on the way, Jonathan. I had received and responded my call into ministry, and I had learned to live in a country that was very different from my home country of the United States.
I remember the first thing I did when we got to the hotel in New Orleans after our long day of travel was to stand under a hot stream of water in the shower for probably 30 minutes (yes, I had taken cold showers for over two years)! It was wonderful to come “Home,” but I also realized that my home would never be confined to one place. Through my time in Honduras, I became prouder and more patriotic of my home country than I ever was growing up. I am so blessed to have grown up in the good old USA! I also learned that God is a God of the nations, and that as a disciple of Christ I am called to be a “world” Christian.
As we celebrate our Independence Day this weekend, let us relish the blessings that we have from living in this place we call home. But let us also remember that our blessings, as disciples of Christ, are given to us so that we can bless others. Let us live into our Christian heritage of outwardly focused love and commitment to our neighborhood, our state, our nation and the world at large.
I hope you have a fun and safe Independence Day celebration this weekend.
Blessings,

Re-Vision Team Update
Thanks to everyone for their participation in the study and conversation about Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. The Re-Vision Team is reviewing all the feedback from the Study Guides and small group conversations through this summer. A major part of our Re-Visioning process is to better understand our community which is our mission area - the context for our ministry both within the church, as well as for our outreach and mission to the larger community around us.
There is also a profile on the “typical” Villagers called Bob & Sally.
Please keep the Re-Vision Team in your prayers. Throughout the summer,
we will be posting updates in the newsletter and on Couch Talk.
Then, in September we’ll be sponsoring a time to gather as a congregation
to continue our conversation as we develop our Vision Statement,
Mission Statement, Core Values/Practices, and strategic goals.
