December Maintenance Guidelines

Mulch Your Flower Beds and Trees.
After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* Plant your container and ball & burlap (B&B) trees when they go dormant.

* Keep pansies moist especially when air is cold and dry.

* Mulch all beds including those around trees to help with moisture. Mulch keeps the areas from freezing as deep.

* Prepare the landscape for winter by mulching with Marcum's Twice Ground Cedar Mulch and Marcum's Grade A Cedar. Mulching helps with moisture and keeps the areas from freezing as deep.

* Continue to control broadleaf weeds in well established warm or cool-season lawns with ferti-lome Weed Free Zone, a post emergent broadleaf weed killer.

Chump's Chatter

When is the best time to prune your trees and shrubs?

Pruning after new growth emerges cuts off the new growth ______, limiting the growth and _____ potential for the entire year.

Pruning in mid to late summer can seriously damage many plants due to the added stress that the summer heat exerts on a plant.

Dahlia's Answer: hormones, bloom

Dahlia's Dirt On The Best Time To Prune!

The majority of your deciduous plants, trees, and shrubs may safely be pruned during their dormant period (prior to when their new growth begins) between late fall and early spring.

Most evergreens prefer being pruned in early spring before their new growth begins. If pruned in the fall, they must be pruned in time for the new growth to seal itself off before winter.

Christmas Italian Kisses

This cookie recipe was given to me thirty-two years ago by my roommate Ginger in Dallas, Texas. Our lifelong friendship began when we both found ourselves newly out of college, transplanted in a new state, and working an extra job for the holiday season at Crate and Barrel.

This recipe has been in her family for years and was traditionally served during the Christmas season.
