Word from the Pastor:
Letter to Confirmands

I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.”
Ephesians 4:1-5

Dear Nora McCracken, Jack Richardson, Owen Smith, Landon Brooks, Samuel Hankins, and Sophia Streetman, the confirmands of our church in 2022, and my little brothers and sisters in Christ:
I’m writing this letter to you on the eve of your confirmation and, for some, your baptism. This will be a great day in the Lord for you and our community, and it marks a transition in your life from childhood to the beginnings of adulthood. When you confess your faith before the congregation, and when you join by either being baptized or remembering your baptisms, you are stepping out on a faith given you by God. It is your faith, given by the Father in the power of the Spirit, uniting you to Christ. Your job from this day forward will be to continue to make it your own all the days of your life.

In your ongoing growth in the Lord, I would ask you to remember two things. While Christ has claimed you as His own and spoken to you each in the language of your own hearts, Christ has handed this faith on to you through a community at First Presbyterian and in your families. That means that neither you nor I nor any of us are truly our own. As Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4, this gift of faith we have been given comes with a responsibility to “maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” That means that our faith eventually leads us to serve and love one another more than ourselves because we know that we all belong to “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.” We are equals. We are siblings. We are family, in Christ Jesus.

The second thing I would encourage you to do as you grow older and more mature in Christ is to remain gentle. Paul reminds us that we are to conduct ourselves in a spirit of humility and gentleness because that is what life looks like when we are submitted to Jesus Christ. This involves patience. The fruit of gentleness is love’s greatest work in us.

I think that this second thing, remaining gentle, will probably be the hardest thing for you, as it will be for all of us. I don’t want to suggest that things used to be better in the “good old days,” but in a way that you may or may not be able to see, the world has become colder and harder. Technology is part of that, and you have grown up with technologies and options I could have only dreamed of when I was your age. The bigger issue, I think, is that the world is both bigger and smaller at the same time. You aren’t tied to any particular place; in a matter of hours, you can be on the other side of the world. That means it is easier than ever to leave behind the ties that brought you this far, as you make your way in the world. It also means that the world is bigger because you can lose yourself in all the options at hand. It is so very easy in the world as we know it now to lose our gentleness, our tenderness, our sense of being tied to and connected with the world around us.

As you confess your faith, I encourage you to cling to Christ and cultivate gentleness in your hearts. Don’t let the world and whatever wonderful future God has in store for you blind you to the fact that you belong to much more than yourself. Remember love defined in Jesus: self-giving, tender, and gentle.

Here I leave you with the words of Jean Vanier, a leader in the L’Arche movement, as quoted by Stanley Hauerwas: “Love doesn’t mean doing extraordinary or heroic things. It means knowing how to do ordinary things with tenderness… Community is made of the gentle concern that people show each other every day. It is made up of the small gestures, of services and sacrifices which say ‘I love you’ and ‘I am happy to be with you.’ It is letting the other go in front of you, not trying to prove that you are in the right in a discussion; it is taking the small burdens from the other” (Living Gently in a Violent World, p.77).

Allow the Lord to be “above all and through all and in all” that you say and do.

In Christ,
Pastor Sam

We Need Grad Info by Monday

On May 22, we will celebrate all graduations in our church family. We’re asking for each graduate’s name; the school or program being completed; the degree, certificate, or rank achieved; and future plans, if applicable. The deadline for submitting this information is Monday, May 16. Please email it to Scottie Bales or call the church office at 423-764-7176. We look forward to sharing this news with the congregation!

Will You Write a Legacy Letter?
As we look forward to celebrating our seniors in worship services they will lead May 22, we are collecting Legacy Letters to present to them on that Sunday. We invite family, teachers, coaches, neighbors, friends, and others to write. It is a wonderful opportunity to encourage our seniors in their future plans and faith as well as to acknowledge the beautiful gifts God has given them.

Legacy Letters describe the impact the senior has had on the writer’s life. Letters can share memories, stories, lessons learned, or significant moments. Our hope is that these Legacy Letters will give family and friends an opportunity to share the influence the seniors have had on those around them. The letters will be a beautiful collection of love and truth that they can read as they begin their new journey after high school, and serve as a reminder of the loving community that is cheering them on.

Brazil Mission Team Wants to Put a Shirt on Your Back
FPC’s 2022 Brazil Mission Team leaves for Natal June 5, carrying 140 Beanie Babies for the children of Felipe Camarão and, we hope, 140 special T-shirts. You can help the team by purchasing a T-shirt for a Bethel School student. We ask you to consider a $25 donation to buy one shirt for one student. Your donation will entitle you to a Brazil team T-shirt of your own.

We will be outside the fellowship hall with a display of shirts for the next two Sunday mornings or until all shirts are gone. Please stop by, take a look, and write a check payable to FPC, memo: Brazil 2022. And please pray for our team: Alice and John Graham, Fernanda and Justin Miller, Teresa Mills, Mott and Chase Mitchell, Karen and John Vann, Sammy Weddington, and Linda Welch.
Sharing Christ June 4
The first Saturday in Junejust three weeks away!will be our next opportunity with the downtown Sharing Christ mission. Please consider helping out! We need volunteers to prep our famous baked ziti and donate cans of green beans, canned applesauce, and rolls for dinner. We need enough Little Debbie cakes for both dinner and the lunches our guests take home with them, and bananas for those lunches. We also need a team to make PB&J sandwiches and pack the lunches handed out to our dinner guests as they leave. Anyone interested in participating in this ministry of spiritual and physical nourishment may text Beth Flannagan at 423-956-3837 or email her or text Becca Tate at 404-790-1223 or email her. We will keep you updated.
Barbara Daniel’s Moving Sale

Organist's Footnotes
Moses Hogan (1957–2003) was an American pianist, conductor, and arranger of international renown, best known for his settings of spirituals. Our choir will sing his arrangement of “Lord, I Want to Be a Christian.” This well-known spiritual was likely composed in 1750s Virginia by enslaved African American persons exposed to the teaching of evangelist Samuel Davies. Hogan gave it a very tender and introspective setting. Over his lifetime, he published 88 arrangements for voice, eight of which were solo pieces. His works are celebrated and performed by high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs today. Moses was much loved by all his classmates, of which I was one, at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.
Since I learned to play it many years ago, I have felt that Douglas E. Wagner’s “Fanfare and Processional” (our postlude) sounds as though it came from the sound track of an epic MGM movie (like Quo Vadis). There are plenty of trumpet fanfares throughout. Wagner (b. 1952) is an internationally recognized composer and arranger. With 30 years as a high school music educator and administrator behind him, Doug now devotes all of his time and energy to writing, editing, and their allied activities. He is an ASCAP award-winning composer and an editor for a major publishing company. He has also served several denominations as a church musician. Doug resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy, a professional lettering artist and music engraver.
