January Newsletter
It is with deep sorrow we inform our customers that our co-founder, Cherie Marcum, passed away on January 8th, 2018. Cherie and Bill founded Marcum's Nursery in 1975 and grew the family business into what it is today. Cherie personally ran her own landscape crew for over 20 years. She was extremely close with her customers and will be greatly missed.  Our family thanks you for your thoughts, prayers, and calls.

Services will be held at FBC Washington on Thursday, January 11th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the FBC Washington or the Oklahoma City Rescue Mission in memory of Cherie.

All store locations will be closed on Thursday, January 11th.

Chump's Chatter

Winter watering... How much & How Often?!

Trees and shrub's roots continue to need moisture for survival during the winter months. Water needs during the winter are less since trees and shrubs go dormant - frequency will depend on the amount of rain or snowfall we receive.  Moist soil holds more heat that dry soil, so watering when the temperature is above freezing will help insulate your plant's roots and help ensure their survival. Another way to help insulate your plants is to apply mulch!
January Maintenance Guidelines
  • Replace worn or broken parts on your irrigation system.
  • Plant your container and B & B trees.
  • Pre-emerge with Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper (a summer annual herbicide), ferti-lome For All Seasons II, EC Grow (orzalyn), or ferti-lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery to turf areas through mid-March to prevent summer weeds such as crabgrass from germinating.
  • Post-emerge to help control winter weeds. Apply High-Yield Hi-Yield Killzall as well as ferti-lome Weed Free Zone on dormant Bermuda when temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • When Oklahoma temps are over 40 degrees, apply our Hi-Yield Dormant Oil Spray to your deciduous trees and shrubs to control overwintering insects. NEVER use dormant oil sprays on evergreen trees or shrubs.
  • November through February are the recommended months to apply ferti-lome Systemic Drench to your young pines for tip borers.
  • Watering your lawn, trees, and shrubs is recommended anytime precipitation has been minimal especially for your broadleaf and narrowleaf evergreens
  • Applying one to two inches of Marcum's Cedar Mulch will insulate and hold moisture for all trees and shrubs.
