AAMSAZ Updates

May 2024

Greetings,

As we step into the month of May, I hope this newsletter finds you all in good spirits and keeping allergies at bay! May brings with it a plethora of reasons to celebrate, and one that particularly excites me is National Barbecue Month! Who can resist the allure of that tasty, savory, smoky goodness?

Amidst our enthusiasm for all things barbecue, it's time to shift gears and delve into some exciting updates from the museum.

First, we've been diligently gearing up for our upcoming exhibitions, aiming to unveil fresh and captivating information for all of you.

  • Among the developments, one unexpected yet deeply meaningful occurrence stands out: we were recently contacted by a woman in Peoria, Arizona, who has traced her family lineage - with documentation - back to the era of slavery. She graciously shared her ancestors' documented words, archived in the Library of Congress as part of the Federal Writers Project (1936–1938). Her ancestor tells of his life as a slave! We are honored to bring this piece of history to light in an exhibition this fall.
  • Additionally, preparations for our "Roots, The Next Generation" exhibition are well underway. We've received a generous donation of photos and information from a local Tucsonan who was present during the filming and pivotal moments, enriching our display with firsthand accounts. We also were gifted a 1977 Ebony that has even more information about...Alex Haley!
  • We continue to enhance The Coach Fred Snowden exhibit with captivating photos showcasing his coaching legacy. We are excited to have this exhibit on loan from Stacey Snowden.
  • Furthermore, we're moving into the vibrant Jazz and Music connections rooted here in Arizona. One of our Interns Esme, a music enthusiast and bass player, is educating us all! Esme is reserching musicians like Ulysses Kay and the influential contributions of Charles Mingus and others, and our exploration promises to be both enlightening and enriching. We also have to thank Volunteer Rose Taulton, who has shared gospel innovations and ideas.

  • As a colorful addition, we've curated the "Our Crowning Glory" exhibit featuring an array of exquisite hats. It is great to hear that some of you feel inspired to replicate these styles—let's embrace the elegance and don our hats with pride!
  • In Our Parents Eyes – a Dormant website that was curated by Dr. Harry Lawson and local Historian Gloria Smith, among others, was recently connected with AAMSAZ. It is a list of local African Americans telling their life story. We are hoping to find relatives of these local historians so that we can add photos and depth as we work to preserve this wonderful local history. Stay tuned for more.

As we navigate through May, let's continue to embrace the richness of history and culture that surrounds us. Juneteenth is just around the corner! Larry Starks and the Juneteenth Festival Committee are busy making plans. We will have updates and announcements as we journey together through the upcoming summer.

Museum Updates!

We are excited to report that AAMSAZ appeared in 1,065 searches, with 86 website visits and 71 people asking for directions in the past 4 months.

(Note: These figures represent data exclusively from Google Maps.)

As we all know, History Matters, and we are excited about a course that we hope will be offered in the fall! We are collaborating with Dr. Morrissey and the UA History Department!

History 102

Tucson Matters:

Making History with Community Museums

Dr. Katherine Morrissey, of the U of A History Department, is designing a course for U of A students. AAMSAZ will be the first of several local museums to participate in this project.

History 102! It is an experiential learning course which will bring students into the practice of public history through their active involvement in community museums. This will be a collaborative history project.

Trooper Jon Covington, of the GSAAC (Greater Southern Arizona Area Chapter) of the Buffalo Soldiers – 9th & 10th Horse Cavalry. Donated resources to the museum and the University of Arizona to assist with further education of the Buffalo Soldiers, esteemed soldiers of the west and their many accomplishments, battles, and honors. Thank you, Jon!

HB 1432 / Racist Covenants

It Passed! On March 29, 2024, Governor Katie Hobbs, alongside the State of Arizona Senate Fifty-Sixth Legislature during its Second Regular Session of 2024, voted unanimously to pass HB 1432, and Governor Hobbs signed it!

This legislation allows property owners to remove such discriminatory restrictions from their governing instruments, thereby taking a crucial step toward rectifying historical injustices. Rather than advocating for the removal of terms, AAMSAZ’s focus has been on amending legislation to ensure that these discriminatory clauses are clearly marked as void, with a notation indicating the date on which they were rendered unenforceable. Void 3/29/2024 These covenants, which have historically perpetuated systemic discrimination, have too often resulted in erasing African American /American history. So, we are still working to make sure as to how this will be addressed.

AAMSAZ was part of the Mapping Racists Covenants (MRC) grant that led us to HB1432, which operated under the auspices of the U of A’s School of Geography, Development, and Environment. Launched in November 2022, this grant has been a pivotal initiative within our ongoing social justice movement, addressing a range of critical issues, including but not limited to the C.R.OW.N. Act, literacy gaps, and healthcare disparities. Dr. Jason Jurjevich, the Director of MRC grant, has been instrumental in advocating in bringing to light the unlawful restrictive covenants.

This development underscores the importance of our collective commitment to advancing social equity and justice. We extend our gratitude to all those who have contributed to this endeavor and encourage continued support as we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Thank you again, Jacque and Delano Price, for representing the museum as part of the MRC that led us to this legislation!

Grateful!

Guiding Light – A Salute Gloria Smith, Local Historian

For those of you who don’t know Gloria Smith, she is a remarkable local historian, author, and former lecturer at the U of A, founder of the Afro-American Genealogical Society, whose tireless dedication has left an indelible mark on our community. I first met Gloria through our mutual involvement in the Tucson Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, back in the mid 1980’s, and from the outset, her unparalleled work ethic was evident.

  • Gloria's impact is multifaceted. She spearheaded grant initiatives, one culminating in commissioning a striking bronze statue located at the the Quincie Douglas Library—a testament to her vision and determination. Commissioned by the grant, the bronze statue was curated and designed by Quin Davis (Quincie Douglas’ grandson).
  • Not content with conventional roles, Gloria lent her creative talents to the design of a Buffalo Soldier Uniform for a local teen, whom went on to win the Miss Teen Arizona pageant, an endeavor that not only showcased Gloria’s ingenuity but also propelled her protégé to victory! In the national pageant, that uniform was worn with distinction on the national stage when that teen was crowned runner-up.
  • FYI—In a twist of fate, that teenager's grace shone brightly when she assumed the title of Miss Teen USA after the original winner's unexpected resignation.
  • Gloria has enriched AAMSAZ with a wealth of resources, including videos, literature, and educational materials. Through her efforts, she has unearthed a treasure trove of captivating stories and meticulously researched insights, ensuring that our community's history remains vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
  • In celebrating Gloria Smith, we salute not only her achievements but also her unwavering commitment to preserving our heritage and inspiring others to embrace the richness of our shared past.

Stage Meets History!

Boardway in Tucson & AAMSAZ!

We are thrilled with our continued collaboration with Broadway In Tucson! Moriah Baker-Lipin, Director of Marketing for Broadway in Tucson, graciously brought several cast and crew members of MJ the Musical to the museum.

During their visit, we had the pleasure of immersing them in the rich history of Southern Arizona. It was a joy to witness their genuine interest and surprise as they discovered fascinating tidbits they hadn't known before. Many expressed sentiments like, "I didn't know that!" and "Wow, I feel like I've received an education about our people in just one hour."

One particularly special moment was when we provided a family history lesson to Josiah Benson, Bane Griffith, and Josh Dawson, who portrayed Little Michael (Jackson) and Marlon Jackson on stage during the tour. It was a privilege to share insights with them and enrich their understanding of our region but also make them aware of their own history.

The highlight of that day was the electrifying performance by the MJ cast. From timeless Jackson 5 classics like "I'll Be There" and "ABC" to Michael Jackson's iconic hits like "Bad" and "Thriller," every song was delivered with impeccable skill and talent. Anastasia Talley's rendition of "I'll Be There," portraying Michael's mother Catherine supporting him during a challenging time, added a touching twist to the performance.

The production dazzled with its seamless blend of dance, song, and storytelling. From the choreography to the vocals, every aspect was a testament to the cast and crew's dedication and artistry. It's no wonder that MJ the Musical has garnered several Tony Awards—it was truly an unforgettable experience.

They learned about Family History, the CROWN Act, and more. Above, reading the sheet music of Margaret Campbell in our display case... they made it into tune and then designed a dance!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Broadway In Tucson and the incredible cast and crew of MJ the Musical for an evening of inspiration, education, and pure entertainment. We look forward to future collaborations and the opportunity to continue sharing the magic of culture though the arts via theater.

Freedom Monument Sculpture Park: A Historic Journey

Discover the profound journey through history at the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama. This immersive experience invites you to stroll along a path adorned artworks depicting the lives of enslaved individuals in America, alongside historic exhibits, including authentic cabins where the enslaved once resided.

This profound journey is the vision of the Equal Justice Initiative, marking its third site in Montgomery, Alabama. Committed to confronting the nation's painful legacy of slavery, racism, and discriminatory policing, the initiative offers an unflinching look at our collective past.

Rising majestically, the National Monument to Freedom stands as a towering tribute, reaching nearly four stories into the sky. It stands as a solemn commemoration of the millions who endured the horrors of slavery. What sets this monument apart is its inscription of 122,000 surnames, chosen by formerly enslaved individuals themselves, as recorded in the 1870 Census following emancipation at the conclusion of the Civil War.

Dwelling where enslaved African Americans lived.

Bryan Stevenson, the visionary founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, recognized the need for spaces that provide a genuine reckoning with the history of slavery. In contrast to many plantation tourist attractions, which often glorify the lives of the enslavers, the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park aims to offer visitors a candid and sincere exploration of this dark chapter in American history.

Beyoncé's Blazing Trails

Breaking records, blazing saddles, and trails, Beyoncé has made history once again. Her latest album, COWBOY CARTER, has not only claimed the coveted No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart but has also debuted at the summit of the Billboard 200. This monumental achievement marks Beyoncé's eighth chart-topping entry.

Beyoncé's ascent to the top Country spot displaced Morgan Wallen's One Thing at a Time on the Top Country Albums and Billboard 200 charts.

According to Billboard, COWBOY CARTER amassed an impressive 407,000 equivalent album units, making it the biggest week of 2024 thus far. This feat is reminiscent of Taylor Swift's 1989 (Taylor's Version), which garnered 1.653 million units last fall. Beyoncé's latest album achieved this milestone through a combination of 300 million on-demand streams and 168,000 traditional album sales.

While Beyoncé's triumph marks the first time a Black woman has dominated the Top Country Albums chart, she joins a lineage of Black artists who have made significant impacts in the genre, including Charlie Pride, Darius Rucker, and Kane Brown, who have all reached No. 1 on the chart in the past.
