The J-School Recognition Ceremony for 2022 doctoral, master's and bachelor degree graduates is Saturday, May 14, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lied Center. Students eligible to participate will receive an email later this month from Student Services with details on how to RSVP and pick up name cards. After the ceremony, join us for a reception on the Stauffer-Flint Hall lawn.

The University Daily Kansan printed 25,000 copies — the largest press run in its 118-year history — to celebrate the Kansas men's basketball team's national championship. The 12-page section, published the morning after the big win, also recapped the women's basketball team's successful season. Advertisers joined in the celebration with full- and half-page ads. For three days, Kansan staffers distributed the section free to students, faculty and staff outside Stauffer-Flint Hall. Copies and a glossy front-page poster now are for sale online and in person at the KU Bookstore. All proceeds support the Kansan. Suspecting that the Jayhawks might win it all, the Kansan produced 3,000 "hopeful" front pages of the special section days in advance. Student journalists covering the Final Four hauled 1,000 to New Orleans. When KU won, Kansan staffers passed them out in the Superdome and on Massachusetts Street to help fans celebrate. The Kansan front-page copies appeared on the CBS network broadcast of the championship celebration and on NBC's Today Show as well as Kansas City TV stations the next morning. ESPN did a story on the Kansan front page on SportsCenter the night of the championship win. Want to support the Kansan and the students working and learning as staffers? Summer and fall Kansan editor and business manager applications are now open. The editor leads the Kansan newsroom, a team that gathers and presents all news, sports, features and other content online, through social channels, in print and other distribution platforms. The business manager leads a team that has ranged from 20 to 30 and makes decisions about advertising and sponsorship sales, marketing and public relations as well as events and campus activities. Applications should include a cover email, a plan for what you would do as editor or business manager and a copy of your resume. Email application to Rob Karwath at [email protected].
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Foundation (KABF) offers up to $16,000 in collegiate scholarships each year. The deadline to apply is May 1. Learn more here.

The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is a 12-week paid fellowship program at a Hearst television station. Applicants must be completing their senior year of college or graduate school and be graduating in the summer of 2022 (May-August). They must have demonstrated an interest in and ability to produce news, either for television, radio or online, excellent writing skills, a demonstrated ability to produce a newscast, and a good base of editorial judgment. Applicants must have a strong academic record and two recommendations from faculty or internship supervisors. They must be willing to spend 12 weeks post-graduation at a Hearst television station of the company’s choosing and be willing to relocate to an appointed employing Hearst station after finishing the program. Harold Kuntz, a sports reporter with Fox 4 Kansas City and president of the Kansas City Association of Black Journalists, will present and talk to students at 5 p.m. April 12 in the Clarkson Gallery. Kuntz has covered national and collegiate teams and will talk about how to become a sports reporter and how to get involved with KCABJ or set up a student chapter. The school's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee announces a Call for Proposals for the 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award. The $5,000 research award, which is open to faculty and graduate students, aims to promote applied research in an area of mass communication science that can directly benefit our understanding, acknowledgment, interaction with, research and/or acceptance of diversity. The call for proposals and detailed instructions about the submission and review process can be found here. Proposals will be accepted between 8 a.m. April 30 and 5 p.m. May 2.
