Dear Nevada AAP Members,

There's a lot going on!

Not only are our members busy doing their part to improve pediatric outcomes in Nevada (details in the articles below), but news of unexplained pediatric Hepatitis and a shortage of baby formula have Nevada families turning to you, their pediatrician, for help.

Hepatitis
Please review closely this Technical Bulletin from the Nevada Department of Health & Human Services. The AAP has also published information for pediatricians and will continue to update you as they learn more about this outbreak of unexplained pediatric Hepatitis and what you must do to help. On May 19, the CDC will offer a free webinar Clinical Recommendations for Adenovirus Testing and Reporting of Children with Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Etiology. Attend live or watch the replay a few hours after the event on the CDC website.

Baby Formula Shortage
Please share with your families the AAP updated With the baby formula shortage, what should I do if I can't find any? on HealthyChildren.org. Also available in Spanish. Please do what you can to discourage families from buying too much product at a time thus lowering the amount available for everyone else. For specialized formulas for children with specific metabolic and kidney disorders, health care providers can request Abbott formulas for patients in urgent need.

Thank you for all you do for kids in Nevada and for being a member of our Chapter! As a community, we will continue to support and inform each other in our dedication to the health of all children.

Be well,

Leann

Cucalon Calderon in the News
Nevada AAP E-cigarette Chapter Champion Jose Cucalon Calderon, MD, FAAP was recently featured in El Sol de Nevada, the largest Spanish language newspaper in Northern Nevada. Read the article here.

Also for your Spanish-speaking families, just yesterday Dr. Cucalon Calderon gave a Camine con Un Doctor talk on the importance of routine preventive care. View this and all the Spanish-language Nevada AAP videos to share with patients on NevadaAAP.org/camine-con-un-doctor.

Nevada AAP chapter members talk with journalists and write op-eds to provide accurate and reliable medical information to the public.

Successfully working with the media requires planning, strategy, hard work, and allocation of resources. The AAP provides tools to help pediatricians ensure that journalists get the most accurate information possible on pediatric issues. Visit Working with the Media to learn more about the many resources from the AAP to support members wishing to work with the media.
Salman Volunteers to be Chapter Instagram Coordinator
UNLV Medical Student and Chapter Member Elena Salman has volunteered to act as the Nevada AAP Instagram Coordinator. In this role, Ms. Salman will play a key role in combating misinformation by providing resource from the Chapter and the AAP.

The Nevada AAP has four social media accounts: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. We encourage all members to like and repost Chapter information!

Twitter, in particular, is a powerful tool that allows individuals and organizations to amplify messages, connect with new and diverse networks, and gain access to local-, state- and federal-level decision-makers. As a pediatrician, Twitter also offers you the opportunity to be part of a community that encourages the exchanging of ideas around child health, while not being constrained by time or geography.  If you aren't yet, the AAP offers information on how to become a #Tweetiatrician as well as information on Using Your Voice Effectively.
