Hello friends,
'Tis the season for BBQs, sunscreen, swimming, and in a few days - fireworks!
Now that most can safely gather again, this summer is bound to be full of family and friend fun. We thought we would add to your experience by giving you a handful of totally random, yet interesting facts to share at your next gathering. Although they have absolutely nothing to do with writing or illustrating (but could inspire an idea), they will make you the hit of the party!
Get ready to blow peoples' minds!
-
M&M's are named for Mars and Murrie. Those delicious little buttons of chocolate were created by Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie who actually didn't get along very well.
- The English word with the most definitions is "Set". It holds the Guinness World Record for 430 different definitions. (That's a lot for only three letters!)
- The national animal of Scotland is... not the Loch Ness Monster. It's the unicorn!
- Water makes different pouring sounds depending on the temperature. What? (Who else is running to the sink to check?)
Here are a few for the kiddos.
- Pigs can't look up and kangaroos can't go backwards.
- The average yawn lasts 6 seconds. Count it out. That's a long time!
- Things humans are genetically similar to- chimpanzees, cows, cats, fruit flies, and BANANAS!
As always, if you have any questions related to SCBWI-MI or the SCBWI organization, please feel free to contact your co-RAs, Carrie Pearson or Jodi McKay or co-ICs, Rebecca Green or Katie Eberts.
Warmly,
Carrie and Jodi

Equity & Inclusion Team Chair, Isabel Estrada O'Hagin, is stepping aside from her position effective August 1, 2021.
Isabel has been an advocate for inclusion in our region for years and in 2019, agreed to chair our brand new Equity & Inclusion Team. She has brought insight, leadership, perspective, and a can-do attitude that is required for this position.
She also requested we create a new scholarship program, called Members For Members, in which members fund memberships for Michigan writers or illustrators who are actively working toward creating children’s books that resonate with diverse readers. In its inaugural year, six members were funded by contributions from 16 members.
In 2021, Isabel was an SCBWI Tribute Fund awardee given to honor her volunteerism.
Isabel says, "It has been an honor to serve as the Equity & Inclusion Team Chair these past two years. I believe it is important to share leadership and for that reason, I notified our Regional Advisors of my decision to resign two weeks ago. Thank you, SCBWI-Michigan friends, for your continued support of our mission to include, embrace, and engage."
