The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett
This past weekend was a good time to just breathe. We bought some plants, used the BBQ for the first time, and I made macaroni salad which is a signal in our house that it is getting closer to Summer.
I looked over the calendar filled with graduations, last recitals, awards and scholarship nights, the annual Bio Trip, and took a deep breath. Ordered senior pictures and high school graduation announcements. Received college graduation announcements.
It was a lot. If you want to see me next month, I am available on the 19th.
| |
|
In addition to breathing, I kept my opinion to myself. Where should Sofia go to school? What will her major be? What dorm should she live in? What is Landon going to do after graduation? What should we have for dinner?
Honestly, I do not know. I am deep in the overwhelm.
I also didn’t interfere.
I am working with someone on a project. It is actually their project, I’m like a chaperone. And while I thought this project should be attended to sometime this weekend, that is not what the someone thought. So I took a breath, held on to my opinion, and didn’t interfere.
Do you notice a pattern here? I cannot always be in charge.
It is as difficult to type that sentence as it is for me to practice what it says.
I am thankful for my husband Leo, who is good at making lists of pros and cons. He also knows when I need to watch trash TV and/or take a nap.
I have one more day until I dive into May. Wish me luck.
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might
be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll
do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Burn Permits Required May 1st
for Areas Protected by Cal-FIRE
Effective tomorrow, May 1st, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Lassen-Modoc Unit will require dooryard burning permits for residential burning within Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties. Burn permits are now available online at Cal-FIRE’s Burn Permit website. You can also obtain a permit from the Cal-FIRE station on highway 36 west of Susanville.
It is important to note that Burn Permits are only for residents who live within the State Responsibility Area, or where Cal-Fire has jurisdictional authority. For information and permits required outside the SRA/Cal-Fire jurisdiction, contact your local city or county fire authority.
| |
|
Normally Cal-FIRE Burn Permits are only required for residents who live within the State Responsibility Area, or where Cal-FIRE has jurisdictional authority, however, in cooperation with local fire departments within Lassen, Modoc and Plumas counties, all residents may apply for a Cal-FIRE Burn Permit to burn when permits are required.
Residents in Susanville and Alturas must contact their fire departments to obtain a burn permit as Cal-FIRE burn permits are not accepted within those jurisdictions.
Burning permits are valid from May 1st, 2024 to midnight April 30th, 2025 for all residential burning on SRA Lands.
Burning can only be done on permissive burn days. To find out if it is a permissive burn day, contact your local Air Pollution Control District.
In Lassen County call 1.530.257.2876; in Modoc County call 1.530.233.3436 and in Plumas County, including Quincy, Greenville and Chester call 1.530.274.7928.
Only natural vegetative material such as leaves, pine needles and tree trimmings may be burned. Household garbage may not be burned.
Do not burn on windy days and do not burn in a burn-barrel unless you have received authorization from your APCD.
You must have a signed permit in your possession while you are burning and you are responsible for always maintaining control of your fire.
Possession of a permit does not protect you if your burn escapes. You are still liable for any suppression costs.
If a burn escapes your control, you should seek help immediately. Wildfires can spread very quickly. A fast response from the fire department can reduce suppression cost considerably. Remember, you may be billed for suppression costs, so the sooner you seek help the better the outcome may be.
Simple common sense can greatly reduce the chance of an escape. If you don’t feel it’s safe to conduct a burn, then don’t.
Changing conditions may necessitate an early burn suspension. Please keep informed about burn restrictions by following Cal-FIRE on Facebook and Twitter.

Is Your Act Ready? Lip Sync Contest
Happens Saturday at Childrens Fair
Now is the time for kids aged 6 to 19 to finish polishing their acts for the big lip sync battle being held as part of the 2024 Children’s Fair this Saturday, May 4th.
This year the date of the event has lent itself to a space theme, “May the Fourth be With You,” playing on the iconic Star Wars saying May the Force be With You.
The lip sync battle will be a major feature of this year’s fair, with local talent taking the stage to pantomime to cool music.
| |
|
You don’t really have to sing or dance, and no special talent is required, just your energy, enthusiasm, and the desire to have fun!
The low-cost event, held at the Lassen County Fairgrounds, is a favorite among local families, with a host of groups and organizations participating to make the fun-filled day a success.
Many parents who visited the fair as children return to treat their own children to the experience.
There is still time if you want to be a part of the Lip Sync Battle click here and follow the link to the sign-up form. The lip sync competition is brought to you by the Tobacco-Use Prevention Education program.
Children’s Fair Coordinator James Hall explains that the purpose of the fair is, “to provide an opportunity for families to spend a pleasant day together that will hopefully reduce tobacco, substance, and child abuse within Lassen County.”
This year the fair will feature a big selection of community organization booths providing resource information and activities for students along with a vehicle display and face painting.
For more information you can call the Lassen County Office of Education at 1.530.251.8711.

Susanville Houses Reno Wobbly In Jail
Delegated to Take Charge of Lassen Lumber Strike, but Gets in Bad
April 30, 1923
A wobbly leader from Reno who went to Susanville to take charge of the Lassen Lumber and Box company proposed strike on May day, came to grief and is now held in the Lassen county jail.
The arrest was made on May 2, according to reliable information received in Reno.
The man, whose name is unknown, blew into the outskirts of Susanville. A Susanville wobbly leader who was on hand to call out the fruit workers, was encountered by an officer before he had accomplished any harm, and was placed under arrest.
The Reno wobbly happened upon the scene and during the scene that ensued the officer was rendered unconscious. The Susanville fruit worker picket, or representative of the wobblies, made his escape, but the man from Reno was landed in jail.
A business man who was in Susanville when the trouble started stated yesterday that the lumber and fruit workers were indignant at the action of the authorities and business men of Susanville in posting signs that the idle workers must keep moving on and not congregate, had threatened a boycott with a view of transacting all their business in Reno.
