We would like to start off by saying Thank you! Thank you for letting us into your most intimate spaces, allowing us to help you create moments in your home that spark joy and bring you comfort!

As we reflect on the year, not only are we proud of the designs that you allowed us to create, but we are proud to have been awarded the 2022 Appen media Best Interior Designer of North Georgia, the Houzz Best of Design and Service 2022, and Best of 2022 my Alpharetta Best Interior Designer. On top of those awards, my personal home was featured in an eight page spread for Modern Luxury Interiors Atlanta!

We have had so much fun designing your spaces from sitting rooms, home offices, cozy family rooms, kitchens and gorgeous second homes.

This year, we want to continue to hone our craft, so in January we will be attending the 2023 Atlanta Market. Staying on the forefront of trends is important to us along with meeting with the vendors to ensure we are supplying you with great quality products.

Here at Kat Nelson Designs, we've done some trend forecasting so you don't have to. Things we are expecting to see in 2023 is the continuing trend of organically shaped furniture, so that means fluffy round chairs and bean shaped sofas. Pieces that create an emphasis on comfort and just add an element of fun to the space, but the caveat to that is pairing the pieces with high contrast structured pieces. You want to create interest in your space, that juxtaposition is truly the key. I don't know if you'll love this one because trust us we are over the greys, as well! There seems to be an emergence of extreme light walls or dark walls. 2022 was our first year where the world began to feel normal again, so we really embraced that. We still have some hurdles with transportation delays, labor shortages, cost increases, but, thankfully, it is all moving forward.

Well, it looks like we are backtracking to a place where we are dialing down the saturation. A little less color with a lot more comfort. To each is own, but it seems that the industry leaders are giving us a lot of serene spaces with only one or two pops of color. We are seeing that color come from the rugs, foliage, and original art that is included in a space. We are also starting to see people get creative with tile, plumbing, and countertop options. This trend is definitely not inclined to the client with commitment issues, but when executed well it can truly be some of the most loved features in a home! A new and prominent trend is considering your lighting as a piece of art. Of course, it needs to be functional, but what the craftsmen are doing with lighting is unreal. You, too, can have a piece of art in your space, except now it's suspended from the ceiling!

We are so excited for this upcoming year and can't wait to bring you ground-breaking designs that are stunning AND functional. Are you ready? Because we definitely are!

Stay well and Live Beautifully!

This is one of those meals that will make you want to recruit your team and cozy up on the couch to enjoy some Sunday night football. Hope you love it as much as we do, Enjoy!

CHILI FOR A CROWD

(It makes a ton!)

  • 1/2 cup Olive Oil
  • 1 3/4 lb Onion (about 5 med to large) coarsely chopped
  • 2 lb Italian sweet sausage (I use bulk)
  • 8 lb ground beef chunk
  • 1 1/2 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 cans (12 oz each) tomato paste
  • 3 tbsp minced fresh garlic
  • 3 oz ground cumin seed
  • 4 oz plain chili powder
  • 1/2 cup prepared Dijon-style mustard
  • 4 tbsp salt
  • 4 tbsp dried basil
  • 4 tbsp dried oregano
  • 6 lb canned Italian put tomatoes, drained (I use for 28 oz cans peeled crushed plum tomatoes)
  • 1/2 cup burgundy wine
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh dill or 5 tsp dried
  • 1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley
  • About 6 lb red kidney beans or 3 cans (16 0z each) drained (I sub black beans)

Heat olive oil in a very large soup kettle. Add onions and cook over low heat for about 10 minutes.

Crumble sausage meat and ground chuck if kettle and cook over medium-high heat, stirring often, until meats are well browned. Spoon out as much fat as possible.

Over low heat, stir in black pepper, tomato paste, garlic, cumin seed, chili powder, mustard, salt, basil, and oregano.

Add drained tomatoes, burgundy wine, lemon juice, dill, parsley and beans. Stir well and simmer, uncovered, for another 15 minutes. Taste and correct seasoning.

Yield to 35 to 40 servings

If using dry beans, pre-cook until tender, about 45 minutes, in separate kettle before adding to chili.

Enjoy!

Performance fabrics are still making big waves in the design world and we are here to tell you why we love it!

Designed by Kat Nelson Designs

Performance Fabrics. Let's talk about it. I know we say they can handle anything...we truly mean it. It can definitely sound too good to be true, but trust us! It is the perfect fabric! Not only is it durable and cleanable it can also be gorgeous.

We aren't talking about your mama's Sunbrella patio furniture fabric! It is the perfect textile for the busy family, the growing family, or for the family that just wants a gorgeous, but practical living space! It gives you the flexibility to have people over for a dinner party and not worry about a possible tipping glass of wine, doggie paw prints, etc! Thankfully, with the advancement of the textile industry, fabrics like Crypton and Sunbrella now come in thousands of colors and patterns. For the more adventurous designs, you have some wiggle room to color outside of the lines!

The kitchen is considered the heart of the home for a reason. It's where we create the memories you hold on to for the rest of your life with friends and family. This year we got to help a lot of people create their dream kitchens, but we wanted to highlight one specifically.

This kitchen needed some TLC .It felt like it was falling flat and not up to date with the rest of their layered and well curated home.

Inside this kitchen you will find many crafted details that we would love to walk you through. The showstopper would have to be the custom 72" range hood. This kitchen has a wall of built-in cabinetry so it was crucial that the added elements felt balanced. The client loves the layered look, so they opted for open shelving which allowed for us to add that incredible statement hood and styled shelves. The cabinets were in fabulous shape, they just needed a fresh coat of paint. With the color being dark and rich it was important to keep the backsplash light, airy, and bright. When you are painting your cabinetry, an easy way to really change the feel of your space is by updating the hardware. We opted for large gold pulls to create a seamless flow, as now the gold in the hood doesn't feel randomly placed. We opted for a "subtle" Moroccan zellige tile. This tile has definitely been a crowd favorite in the design world in 2022 and we are happy to share it's not going anywhere soon. Due to them being handmade, you are left with these gorgeous variations and no two tiles look alike. It really is those unique moments that make it feel lived in, yet luxe. Another stunning feature, that adds so much depth and richness to this kitchen is the gorgeous countertops. The material definitely is on the more adventurous side. You notice the incredibly strong veining and pulls every color from their home, which really helps create a cohesive effect! We selected these gorgeous custom pendants to add another layer and create that richness. They help add to the cozy and warm vibes in this rustic kitchen. Saving the best for last, the clients opted to add reclaimed beams and it really feels like the little detail that took this kitchen over the top. We absolutely loved collaborating on this kitchen with the clients and we hope you love it as much as we all do!

We are often asked where to donate furniture as they might still be in good condition and need a new home. Furnish with Love is a non-profit organization specializing in collecting, refinishing, and finding new homes for gently used items. The goal is to give back to the community and offer help to those coming out of homelessness. With the help of volunteers and different community organizations, they are truly making a difference!
