Why do we need the humanities?

The humanities are vital for exploring what it means to be human.

They create spaces for public dialogue, explorations of culture and heritage, investigations of past and current issues, and opportunities for lifelong learning.

Part of the Bigger Picture: When Local History Mirrors the National Discourse
The Great Migration was not exclusive to the Deep South and Detroit, Michigan. It also was evident in the history of Cass County, Missouri. A majority of the African-American population left Cass County, relocating to Kansas City during the years of the Great Migration 1916-1970, for two main reasons - better educational and employment opportunities. The Harrisonville School District was one of the first in the country to implement desegregation after the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. It had a negligible effect on slowing the decline in the African-American population of Cass County.
