To Winter

by Claude McKay

Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!

There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,

The ripples on the stream’s breast gaily run,

The wind more boisterously by me blows,

And each succeeding day now longer grows.

The birds a gladder music have begun,

The squirrel, full of mischief and of fun,

From maple’s topmost branch the brown twig throws.

I read these pregnant signs, know what they mean:

I know that thou art making ready to go.

Oh stay! I fled a land where fields are green

Always, and palms wave gently to and fro,

And winds are balmy, blue brooks ever sheen,

To ease my heart of its impassioned woe.

The Past Week at the D. R. Evarts Library

We had a Pre-K Visit from E.J.A.'s two classes last Wednesday, where we spread out and had a read-aloud of Jan Brett's The Three Snow Bears. We had some playtime in the Family Room afterwards–always a blast to having the kids here!

At Innovation Studio and MakerSpace, we learned about the power of magnets repelling from one another. Kids made sail cars and raced them on our maglev track. So many creative designs!

This month's Mending Circle was attending by all ages, with host Katherine giving a crash course on crocheting. One member brought by their vintage foldable Singer machine as well, with these beautiful inlays and engravings.

On Friday we had another school visit, this time Ms. Whiting's Kindergarten class. They're studying gardening right now so we read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle and then had some fun in the Family Room.

At last Saturday's Story Time and Craft with Miss Cam we had a big group for some Valentines Day themed stories and colored heart decorations. Afterward, the kids played with toys and puzzles!

Our Evarts Engineers Robotics Team completed more design improvements just in time for their next tournament at JFK Catholic Prep School in Somers this weekend. Best of luck team!

These programs, and the many others offered at the Library, are only possible because of the generosity of our community.

Innovation Studio & MakerSpace

Join Ms. Kathy and Ms. Dorraine this Wednesday from 3:30-5pm as we use the repelling properties of magnets to race maglev sail cars!

Story Time

Join Miss Cam on Saturdays at 11 am for Story Time & Crafts! Best suited for children ages 3-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Robotics Team

The Evarts Engineers Robotics Team is a combined library program and 4H special club. These teens & serious tweens have fun designing and building a challenging team robot. They compete in area tournaments throughout the winter, meeting and collaborating with other teams. We're always looking to expand our team: email Coach Kathy at [email protected] for more information.
