Petunia
Petunias are used for bedding plants, window boxes, hanging baskets, and planters. They are fast-growing and like well-drained, fertile soil. Pinch back to encourage branching and deadhead regularly.
Forsythia
Its brilliant yellow to gold blossoms appear early and are one of the first to welcome spring in Oklahoma. It's very fast growing, tolerates most soil types and loves the sun.
Oklahoma Redbud
One of the most desirable varieties of the Redbud, its heart-shaped and glossy, rounded green foliage adds a vibrant contrast to its dark pink and wine-red flowers that bloom in early spring. 20'-25' tall and 15' - 20' wide.
APRIL MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
  • Plant your container, ball & burlap (B&B) trees, shrubs and perennials!
  • In mid-April, after danger of frost, plant bedding plants, vegetables, herbs, summer flowering bulbs, and annual seeds.
  • Let spring flowering bulb (daffodil, tulip etc.) foliage remain as long as possible before removing it.
  • Add organic Redbud Compost to revitalize your soil nutrients while planting new plants.
  • If you haven't already, fertilize all trees and shrubs with Marcum's Original Slow Release 18-6-12 fertilizer, or one of our ferti-lome mixes.
  • Apply ferti-lome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insecticide Drench to trees and shrubs to keep insects away.
  • Apply ferti-lome Rose and Flower Food with Systemic Insecticide once a month through our growing season.
  • Apply ferti-lome's Liquid Systemic Fungicide II to prevent mildew and leaf spot diseases for roses, photinias, etc.
  • Don't prune spring flowering bushes until all blooming is complete.
  • Over seed for fescue lawns. Ask a Marcum expert for details.
  • Fertilize warm-season grasses three to five times per season using one of Marcum's Big Mont's Nitro-Green 31-0-0 fertilizer, or Marcum's BR's Lawn Tonic 28-6-12 fertilizer, or Marcum's Original Slow Release 18-6-12 fertilizer special blends. We will help you select the best blend to suit your needs.
  • Begin mowing warm-season lawns. Cutting height for bermuda  and zoysia should be 1-1.5 inches high.
  • Spray or apply ferti-lome Weed Out products to bermuda, fescue and zoysia when air temps are between 65 and 85 degrees.
  • Use ferti-lome Weed Free Zone  when temps are still under 85 degrees. Weed Free Zone kills over 80 different hard to kill weeds, even poison ivy! Great to use on Henbit and other broad leaf weeds.

Need help planning your garden??  Our friends From Seed to Spoon can help! Learn how to download the Seed to Spoon app at seedtospoon.net
Dale Spoonemore is an Oklahoma gardener who turned his small raised beds into a growing operation that feeds his family of 6! He uses his knowledge and experience to teach others not only how to garden, but also how to create healthy meal plans using their harvest.
The app is an excellent resource that includes treatments for pests, garden planning and health benefits of fruits and vegetables in your garden.

You'll need:
Clay (found at craft stores)
Compost or Potting Soil
Flower Seeds (easy to grow varieties or wildflower seeds do best)

Instructions:
1. Divide your materials so you have:
5 parts clay
1 part compost/potting soil
1 part seeds
2. Combine the clay and compost. Add a little water if your mixture is dry. The mixture should be moist but not dripping wet; similar to the consistency of cookie dough.
3. Add the seeds to the clay and compost. Thoroughly work the materials together with your hands.
4. Shape the mixture into balls about the size of a golf ball.
5. You can plant the seed balls while they're still moist, or allow them to air dry.
6. Find areas in your yard and surrounding community that could use a little green. Toss or place your new treasures directly onto bare soil. As long as they are watered (either manually or by rain), the clay will break down and the seeds will grow.

Some seed suggestions:  Cosmos,  Milkweed,  Red poppies,  Coreopsis, or  Coneflower.
