A New Song
"Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him."
Psalm 98:1
praise_the_lord.jpg
Verse 1: "Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him."

Psalm 98 opens with a command: "Sing to the Lord a new song" (Net Bible). Notice the One who is the audience for our singing. We are to "Sing to the Lord."

It seems some of our contemporary hymns are sung to an audience rather than to the Lord.

The phrase "a new song" appears in a number of the psalms. What's wrong with "a new song"? If we are growing and maturing in Christ, we ought to be developing content for new songs to be sung to the Lord.

The psalmist gives reason for the command to sing "anew song" to the Lord: "for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him."

The theme of our "new song" should not only tell the world what He does, but also reveal who He is.

"Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Col. 3:16 NASB).

What song shall we sing to the Lord? I came up with 3 thoughts: (1) to glorify who He is; (2) praise Him for what He has done; and (3) express gratitude for His love and grace.

I would like us this morning to sing one of my favorite hymns that actually expresses all 3 of these desires. Please join me in singing Charles Wesley's great old hymn, "And Can It Be That I Should Gain":
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in Saviour's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
