"Oh, James and John, You Foolish Boys"

Luke 3:21

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it can’t be like that for you; whoever wishes to become great among you must serve the rest and whoever wishes to be first among you must serve the needs of all. For the Promised One came not to be served but to serve, and to give one life to secure release for many.”

*NEW* Agape MCC’s Holiday Series

"Ladder to the Light"

This Sunday we will begin a new series based on the visions and wisdom teachings of Steven Charleston, a member of the the Choctaw Nation, former Episcopal Bishop of Alaska, and President and Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School. Our guide will be his most recent book, Ladder to the Light; An Indegenous Elder’s Meditations on Hope and Courage.

We will be climbing the ladder slowly throughout the upcoming holiday season, including Advent, and our ascent will culminate on Christmas Eve. Please join us beginning this Sunday as we make the descent into the Kiva. If you are practicing virtually, you have the advantage of creating your own sacred space and time for our gatherings. It should be a space that evokes cave energy, solitude, and closeness to the earth. We will talk more about that at this week’s gathering. See you in the Kiva.

Join us for "Taosim",

a course created by Glenda Taylor and facilitated by Rev. David Wynn.

Glenda Taylor writes:

“This is for me one of the favorite things that I have presented through the years, through story-telling, art, references to history, and through other means, in workshops and lectures in several states and now online. I consider it so valuable to us at this particular time, as it explores a way of life that brings peace of mind and serenity of spirit, even in chaotic times like what we are experiencing today. Taoism is an ancient Chinese wisdom. This self-paced seven-lesson course is packed with audio and video content, suggestions for contemplation and activity, quotations and vocabulary, suggestions for further study, and a great deal more. All seven lessons are free for now.”

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Volunteer with the Fort Worth Animal Shelter! Want to make a difference? Join us!

There are so many ways to volunteer your time to help Fort Worth Animal Care and Control (FWACC). We could not save more than 90% of the pets who come through our doors annually without our incredible volunteer team. If you're passionate about helping people and pets, we have a "job" for you!

Volunteers are needed for almost everything we do, but our biggest volunteer needs are:

  • Adoption Matchmaker- help families find their perfect match among the 300 or more pets waiting at our shelter.
  • Dog Enrichment Program - provide enrichment (in the form of toys, treats, and more) to pets in our care. Enrichment is critically important to help pets stay mentally and physically stimulated while they are in the confinement of a shelter.
  • Dog Walking- walk, socialize and train selected pets in our care that are most in need!
  • Paw-parazzi - help photograph the pets in our care waiting for their homes. By having clear, distinguishing photos showcasing the animals personality, it helps increase their adoptability and connect them with their new family.
  • Play Group Monitors - with over 300 dogs in our shelter on any given day, we rely on our play yard areas to help dogs get much needed exercise and enrichment in play groups. These volunteers help us monitor the yards and ensure the play groups are safe and fun for every dog involved.
  • Greeters - help potential adopters find their way around the shelter and meet adoptable cats and dogs

Off-Site Adoption Centers/Events - assist with adoption matchmaking, cleaning and greeting potential adopters at our two off-site adoption centers and off-site adoption events

General assistance with cleaning, laundry, dishes, and more!

Foster Volunteers - volunteering in our foster care program is an extremely rewarding opportunity for individuals and families. Our foster program allows pets that are too young for adoption, who are recovering from an illness or injury, or who are in need of other care to stay in private homes until they are ready to be adopted.

SPIRITUAL BREATH

SACRED JOURNEY. There are no shortcuts on the spiritual path, although many have tried to find one. Learning the lessons the Spirit teaches takes time, patience and perseverance. It requires a sense of discipline. It takes a level of self-awareness that can be difficult, because it requires that we are honest with ourselves. We have to look deeper. We have to study. We have to live a rule of life that never takes love for granted. It is not easy, but it is joyful. The sacred journey may take us up some very steep hills and demand we keep going even when we are tired, but it also shows us the wonder of life along the way and the purpose of life when the day is done.

Weekly Call to Prayer

Great Spirit of Creation and Love,

We are so thankful for the Life Force that flows through us from your Divine Presence. And we ask that the healings winds blow through our lives. Heal our Mother Earth, so wounded and broken from human mistreatment. Heal our relationships, broken by harsh words, acts of malice, and disrespect. Heal our nations from war and economic hardships. Give us wisdom, grace, and courage to act on behalf of those siblings in need.

Help us to connect with you through living with and loving all your children. Help us to be your anointed vessels in service to others.

We ask it; we believe it; and it is so!
