Gavina Gabourel came to the United States under the sponsorship of Healing the Children Northeast in 2006 at the age of 5 and again at age 13 for the correction of a serious birth defect. Her 20-hour surgery was conducted at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center by a team of physicians led by Dr. Michael Bourque.
Gavina remained in Connecticut for several months for postoperative care, residing at the home of Mary and Steve Tracy in Goshen, CT and attended the WAMOGO Regional High School in Litchfield, CT. The Tracy’s have kept in touch with Gavina over the years, visiting her at her home in Belize on several occasions.
Thanks to Healing the Children’s intervention, Gavina has been able to lead a life of good health, happiness and accomplishment. In 2015, she married Alfred Cunningham, a police officer in Belize City. And earlier this fall, she graduated from the University of Belize with a
degree in nursing.
Congratulations Gavina!
