from the ptsa president
Welcome, Saxon families! On behalf of Langley High School’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), it is with joy and excitement that I welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year. The PTSA works closely with Langley administrators, teachers, and staff to support the curriculum and provide programs that directly benefit our students. We could not do this without our Langley parents, who play a vital role in maintaining the tradition of excellence at our school.

If you're reading this copy of our weekly electronic newsletter, then you're already off to a good start! It's packed full of info about things going on at the school and in our community. Be sure to tell your friends to subscribe at ptsalangley.org. It will arrive in your inbox every Thursday afternoon. Also check the PTSA website frequently for the latest updates and helpful links.

Aside from the eNews, a great way to stay informed (and meet fellow Langley parents!) is to attend the Principal’s Q&A and General Membership Meetings. These meetings are an opportunity to ask questions and hear the latest news directly from Principal Greer, as well as other featured faculty and staff members. Meetings this year will be held on Sept 28, Nov 16, and Mar 8 in the Langley Lecture Hall, virtually Jan 11, and in the Cafeteria May 3. The Principal’s Q&A begins at 9 am, followed by the General PTSA meetings at 9:30 am. Additional info can be found on the PTSA homepage and in future issues of Langley eNews.

In addition to staying informed, I hope you’ll join me and many other parents in supporting our children and the Langley community by volunteering through the PTSA. Members are involved in many activities throughout the year, such as: Vision and Hearing screenings, Ethics Day, Career Connections and more. Even amidst busy schedules, there is something for everyone! We hope that you will reach out and offer to help with something that interests you. Click here for volunteer opportunities. To join for the first time or to renew your membership and, if possible, to donate, click here.

Finally, how can the PTSA better support you and your child? What changes would you like to see at Langley? Is there a program you'd like to see implemented? Send questions, comments, and suggestions to me at ptsalangley@gmail.com.
I look forward to working with all of you to make this another successful school year!

~ Jamie Loving, PTSA President

berries for books
Langley sophomore Samantha Grayer has always enjoyed helping others in her community. Samantha’s favorite subject is English, and she realized there are students who may not have access to the same learning and reading resources as she did and that face a variety of literacy issues. Not long ago, after making a few batches of chocolate covered strawberries, the idea formed to bring together these two interests, and she created the nonprofit Berries for Books

Berries for Books promotes and supports child literacy, to give other students an opportunity to explore and develop their love for English. To show her appreciation to donors, Samantha’s provides chocolate covered strawberries when she has a batch.

The first annual Berries For Books book drive is currently in progress and so far has collected over 1500 books. This drive will support an elementary school in Ward 8 of Southeast D.C. in need of significant literary assistance.

Books can be placed in donation boxes found at the following locations:

  • Huntington Learning Center, 366 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20190
  • Thelo Greek, 10123 Colvin Run Road, Great Falls, VA 22066
  • Great Dogs, 9859 Walker Road,Great Falls, VA 22066

welcome back breakfast
This past Monday, the PTSA hosted a Welcome Back Breakfast for the entire Langley staff. This was a festive occasion as staff members greeted each other and caught up after the summer break. You could feel the excitement in the air as everyone was gearing up to start the new school year. The staff enjoyed coffee and breakfast in the Cafeteria before they headed to an orientation program led by Principal Greer.

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped decorate, serve, and clean up after the event, and to our fabulous PTSA Hospitality chairs Kristen Simko, Rina Kaul, Kristi West and Clare Bradshaw for pulling together this great kick-off for the new school year.
