Martin A. Samuels, M.D. Memorial Lecture

Voice in my ear, image in my mind, gratitude in my heart

Farzaneh Sorond, M.D., Ph.D.

Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs

Dean Richard H. Young and Ellen Stearns Young Professor

Professor of Neurology (Stroke and Vascular Neurology) and Neurology (Critical Care)

Northwestern Medicine | Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine

Farzaneh Sorond received her BS in Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Houston before earning her MD and PhD at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her neurology residency at Harvard-Longwood Program, followed by a joint fellowship in Stroke and Neurocritical Care at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. After completing her clinical training, she joined the Stroke and NCC Division in the Department of Neurology at the BWH in July 2001 where she remained until her move to Chicago in 2015 to join the department of Neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. During her time as a faculty at the BWH, she developed her research program in vascular brain aging, established the Neurosonology Service the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and honed her skills as a mentor.

At Northwestern, her research has remained focused on understanding the mechanisms underpinning age-related changes in cerebral small vessel function, structural changes in the brain and the clinical outcomes of cognitive dysfunction and impaired mobility. In 2022, she was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Simpson-Querrey Center for Neurovascular Research at Feinberg School of Medicine, where she will have the opportunity to significantly expand her scientific inquiries into vascular contributions to age-related cognitive and mobility dysfunction.  In addition to her research and clinical work, she has also continued to pursue her interest in mentoring and faculty development at Northwestern, where she has successfully launched several initiatives to support and promote junior and mid-career faculty. And in September 2022, she was appointed the Vice Dean for Faculty at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, allowing her to further expand faculty mentoring and development programs.
