FMLink News Digest I March 20, 2024
Integrated health, safety and security solutions provider Securitas Technology has just released its sixth annual Global Technology Outlook Report, which features insights, trends and data on a variety of security topics across all verticals, as well as guidance to navigate some of the changes. Exclusive survey data from more than 900 security decision-makers from around the globe reveals insights into new technologies, opportunities and challenges in the security industry.

The report offers insights on emerging technologies; artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics; cybersecurity and data privacy; and cloud migration, listing these four trends shaping the security industry in 2024:
  1. Data-backed insights for cross-organizational growth
  2. Rise of cloud migration and hardware-free architecture
  3. Smarter, faster and more comprehensive security technology
  4. The era of verification

The AGF COLLECTANDRAIN FLOODELIMINATOR Model 5900 is a fail-safe for dry fire sprinkler systems that protects a facility from flooding when an auxiliary drain malfunctions due to a freeze and break, accident or vandalism. This small addition allows a facility to get back online faster with less cleanup and expense.

When the FLOODELIMINATOR encounters the pressurized flow of water from a tripped dry valve, its internal mechanism closes, preventing large amounts of water from being released out of the malfunctioning auxiliary drain. It is suitable for both dry and pre-action systems as well as compressed air or nitrogen, requires no power, automatically resets when the system is restored, does not impede normal system draining, and can easily be retrofit onto existing small-volume low-point drains or auxiliary drains (drum drips). The FLOODELIMINATOR is also available on select COLLECTANDRAIN auxiliary drain models.
Nonprofit real estate data standards group OSCRE International just announced that in a 3-2 split decision, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has finalized rules that require registrants to disclose certain climate-related information in registration statements and annual reports. Over 20,000 comments were filed during the public comment period, with many of them focused on the difficulty in obtaining Scope 3 emissions data. Separate and apart from the SEC rule, more than 60 local and state environmental reporting requirements have either already been approved or are under consideration that do include Scope 3 reporting requirements.

To help you navigate the new reporting mandate, OSCRE has a new resource page devoted to the topic of energy data and the SEC. The page includes a list of the five use cases in the Energy Data Standards, a chart to help you make the business case for implementation, and a link to the SEC Fact Sheet on this subject that includes phased-in compliance dates for reporting. OSCRE has also developed an on-demand Effective Energy Data Management Practices Certificate Program Certificate Program to help you build skills to collect, analyze and report environmental data. Developing these skills is a critical component of your organization’s data strategy for reporting across a variety of jurisdictions.

Driven by demand for low-cost energy and the growing number of organizations committing to net-zero targets, the global market for district heating and cooling systems market is expected to grow to over $745 billion by 2032. As a single source of heating and cooling for multiple buildings, district energy installations worldwide typically reduce primary energy demand in heating and cooling by 50% and can achieve operational efficiency of up 90%, according to the United Nations Environment Program.

These impressive results are made possible in part by fluid flow technologies designed by HVACR manufacturers such as Armstrong Fluid Technology. Today's intelligent fluid management systems (iFMS) can now integrate superior pump and control technology into a single packaged solution that can save 30% or more over other parallel pumping configurations. Energy savings can exceed 70% compared to a constant speed system. Modern variable speed controllers integrate with building BMS systems to provide best efficiency modulation and staging while serving as many as 16 zones.

Addressing the many changes in the workplace, commercial interiors event NeoCon is presenting keynotes and educational sessions that recognize the dilemmas of interior designers and facility managers as they figure out who is using the space, for what type of work, for how many days a week, and what that space should look like. During NeoCon 2024, June 10-12 at THE MART in Chicago, over 40,000 people will gather to explore new commercial furniture and furnishings solutions and listen to the following sessions at the NeoCon Presentation Studio.

Like many cities across the U.S., occupancy in downtown Chicago offices is hovering at just over 55%. Hybrid models of work—with employees working from home part time and at an office part time—seem to be here to stay. They also present challenges in designing offices. Come hear from designers, executives in the trenches and leasing agents who have a bird’s-eye view into making (or remaking) spaces that reflect the nature of work today. Find out what has worked—and what hasn’t—in encouraging employees to come back to the office. (Hint: It’s more complicated than installing a ping-pong table.)

This year’s AHR Expo in Chicago was a huge success and a sign that the big show is back in full swing, according to air filtration solutions provider HealthWay. With an estimated 50,000 attendees and over 1,600 exhibitors, there was a lot to take in over three days. HealthWay was on hand not only to exhibit its wide range of industry-leading air filtration solutions but also to take part in the workshops and discussions that make AHR 2024 EXPO so valuable to the industry.

Decarbonization
Decarbonization was a hot topic of AHR 2024 as many companies and municipalities are searching for ways to curb their carbon footprint. HealthWay is already at the forefront of bringing efficient air filtration with flexible, scalable solutions. The company’s DFS technology was on display so people could see it is possible to achieve a high level of ultrafine particle filtration without the penalty of increased pressure drop. HealthWay says it is dedicated to helping you reach your decarbonization goals, whether it is from a new installation or a retrofit.

Global heat transfer technology provider EVAPCO's new PHW (Parallel Hybrid Water cooler) induced-draft parallel hybrid fluid cooler is designed to maximize heat rejection, allowing reduction of connected horsepower. The CTI-certified PHW is designed as a complement to EVAPCO's ESW4 (Energy-efficient low-Sound Water cooler), the company’s largest and most energy-efficient single cell evaporative cooler.

The PHW offers high-tonnage capacity and layout flexibility for industrial plants, data centers and large HVAC applications, especially where requirements call for fewest units, connections and fans. Two box sizes are offered: 12 ft. x 24 ft. and 14 ft. x 26 ft. Fan motor sizes are 30 hp to 100 hp, with two 7.5 HP pump motors per cell. Hot process fluid enters the coil through lower coil connections. Cooled water from the basin unit is pumped through distribution nozzles to be sprayed over the coils. Ambient air is drawn into the unit from above in parallel flow with water over the coil.
